My layover measurements didn't take stretching into account. So these are gonna need trimming.

Second rim went much better. I just nicked a MTB wheel from the boneyard and used the hub and spokes on the crusty 1930's rim. Front and rear rims match and are awesome crusty pinstriped rims from an Elgin. With a nice coat of satin clear to preserve the crust.

I've got rims to lace today...
Note the stagger is different, gotta be careful you can't just copy a lace job. Sometimes you have to flip it too.

I hate lacing rims where the first clockwise hole from the valve hole is a “down hole”. I usually screw up the lacing on the flip side and have to start the flip side over. I only build 4 or 5 wheels a year, not enough to remember how it’s done.

Hay people, I don’t know about all youse but I’m having way more fun with this build off than with the official ones.
Yeah I like sharing the thread. It's kinda weird and can be confusing but still fun. Come on everybody post your progress.

Picked up these era correct Araya TM-18 wheels complete with Shimano smoke chrome STX hubs and Panaracer Smoke / Dart tires . Started to look for some kind of safe soap I could use for the 30 year dirt build up and in our gest bathroom I found this Disney Frozen Shampoo and Conditioner . Perfect solution for these old tires ?

Finally had some time and good weather to tryout the Hawthorne with the vintage steering wheel. It rode well even though the running gear and drive train need service. I rode sans helmet figured the odds of getting the virus was larger than crashing out. The steering is quick like driving a sports car.

Still not sure where this is going to end up.

Basically all I've done for the past week is move parts around.
The mock up is becoming more complete though, once I have everything prepared it should go together in a few hours.

I need to change the brackets on my chainguard so it can mount to my frame.

These two front fenders and the stray colorflow brace will become my back fender, and I sourced an art deco stem from the pile for this bike.

I started building a front rack that will work with cantilever brakes. My work bench is buried.

So I used my floor, a giant vice and a giant hammer to make a rack brace.

Here are the basic parts.

Looks like it works. Now I need to rob and switch the longer stays from the black rack.

All my steel straps were too short so I used rivet nuts on the fork to mount the rack. I use JB Weld on the rivet nut to prevent them from coming loose and turning. They can still come loose. I use aluminum rivet nuts, that way if they become loose you can bend the edges up with a screwdriver and hold it with vice grips to prevent it from twisting when you drill it out. Then you can put a new rivet nut in the hole. It’s for holding a small bag that will have a spare tube, air, patches, tire irons, electrolytes, sandwich and a cell phone. I don’t think I’ll paint it, it’s a rat.

First grandbaby was born last night, so took time out from Know when to Fold'em and did my first official act as grandpa this afternoon. The first of many wooden toys to come. Then I worked some more on the bike for my son. Got the front brake hooked up and mounted some reflectors since the bike will spend half or better of its time on city streets. Still waiting on the tires. Gotta decide on some handlebar grips too.
