Sitting at the Drive-In with the family tonight. It's a great old school to kick it. They run the old concession ads other clips from the 50's drive in stuff. I know that drive ins in America are slowly dying and I personally think that is a shame. I didn't go to a drive in until I moved to Wichita 12 years ago. Anybody else have any drive ins left in their area?

They tore down one from the '50's near here around 1980 and replaced it with a Multi-plex. :( I saw the original 101 Dalmatians there as a child, we used to sneek extra viewers and Rolling Rock ponies in under the third seat of my parent's Safari wagon in the seventies. There was a miniature steam train for kiddies to ride after the matinee, but it was gone before the place shut down.

haven't been this year yet but I will here pretty soon. I remember going there to see Dukes of Hazard and a General Lee from here in town and that was used in the movie show up even honked the horn and everthing

when i was in high school, there was only 1 drive in for about 100 miles, it shut down in 98 and was torn down, seems about 10 years later new ones were being built in every other town :)

i loved going as a kid, funnel cake, corn dogs and lemon shake ups !!! it was like going to the fair :D

There's two of them within about two hours of my house. They're great, one even has three screens. Nothing beats a summer night at the drive in.

Man I haven't been in years, but I have one not 10 minutes from me. It apparently was the first drive-in in Canada. http://www.thestarlite.ca/starlitepage.php I think the last time I went they had a cruise night there and all they showed was American Graffitti, California Kid and not sure on the third, but it was awesome. We went in my dads 40'Ford coach( flat black, red wheels, caps and rings, fat whitewalls and flathead...good times)

we have on no more then 15 minute drive my place and i try and go as many times as possible specially on double feature and triple feature nights....... nothing beats the drive in

We go to the drive-in a few times a summer.

As a kid in the late 50s and 60s the family would go to the drive-in, mom, dad, and 3 or 4 of us kids and go, it was the only way the whole family could go to a movie together.
Then in the late 60s and early 70s, it was off to the drive-in with friends, and dates in my 59 Chevy, then 55 Ford Crown Victioria, and later in my Vega GT.
Back in those days there was about a dozen drive-in theaters here in Wichita, today there is one, but it a double screen theater. I think most of the old drive-ins here are now shopping centers, car lots, or industial parks.

About 15 years ago we started going to the drive-in again. Used to have a pickup, and would throw some cushions, pillows, blankets, a cooler, and a big big bag of popcorn in back. Park backwards, and get set to spend the evening watching movies, until early in the mourning, there were times we would be soaked by the mourning dew when we left. That was fun.
Don't have the pickup any more we take the car, and thats OK, and now days the movie sound comes from the car radio and sounds alot better than the drive-in speakers.

Find a drive-in theater in your area, grab your best girl, or the family, or even friends, pile in a clean set of wheels, and go. Support a dwindling American icon, the drive-in theater.

We have on Cape Cod one left. http://www.wellfleetdrivein.com/

It has been a tradition for every Cape Cod family local to the outer Cape and tourist alike. The original owners have passed away but is still going strong. It has a cinema at the head of the complex with four theaters. Also a Dairy bar and low end snack shack with mini golf. There is a flea market that runs during the day.

I was fortunate as a child to go to this drive-in when it was new. As I remember you would put your kids in their PJ's, pack some snacks, and head to the drive-in where you would park your car and run to the play ground with kids you didn't know in their PJ's and have one heck of a time.

Americana at it's best. You would then watch the movie snacking and hearing my parents talking of the actors and what movies they had been in. I thought that was cool knowing about actors but the truth was my Mom and Dad had been big into going to the movies. Now I find my wife and I did the same for our kids and babble on and on about who was in what films( we have become like our own parents).

When in High School and as young adults we partied hardy at the drive-in. One tip was to park on the right side of the theater to get away from the no-seeums, but then you had to listen to West Road. By 1976 I bought into the trailer park next door (for six long years). My friends and I would go down to the park fence to sit and watch a free movie. (I just remembered just now about all the people we would smuggle in) I could almost set a clock by the beeping horns as the good guys were getting the bad guys from my trailer.

It's good to know it's still there.

We still have a couple around the Flint area. Gigs and I haven't been in a couple of yearsbut they are definitely not the fun that they used to be. The last time we went it was nothing more than a bunch of rich punks running their Tuners around the lot and playing their crap music. The drive In people didn't want any trouble so they wouldn't say anything to the punks or call the cops. We got our money back and left.

The greatest experience of all time was being the only four wheeled vehicle at the drive in! My old girlfriend and I went to see heck's Angels Forever. Over 500 motorcycles and one short box Chevy (mine)! We had a ball and everybody behaved themselves!

When I was in high school there were two drive-ins in my town. They were just a few blocks apart and the screens faced each other. We would go to the parking lot of a tavern called Valley's and park there so we could see both drive-ins at the same time. No sound, but we got to see two for free. Gary

The local bicycle group TBAG (Tempe Bicycle Action Group) has bike ins all the time here where I live. Ive never been but it does sound like fun. 8)

Bikin’ to the Drive-In!
Posted by: Jeremy in Just for Fun, Movies, Scottsdale, TBAG Third Fridays
Movie Lovers! Bike Riders! We know how much you love doing your two favorite things.

No longer will you have to balance that heavy film projector on your handle bars. No more extension cords & generators needed for your Blu-Ray player & flat panel! Hey, you don’t even have to watch the movie alone as you would on other lonely Friday nights!

Thats’ right, it’s time for another TBAG 3rd Friday BIKE to the DRIVE-IN!

Eyes straining to enjoy the tiny lcd on your iPhone? Why, they’ve got screens, big as a house! And no less tham 6 of ‘em for crying out loud!

Sound? Only the highest quality, stereo reproduction – on your very own portable FM radio! YOU DECIDE how loud!

Forget about the RedBox, these guys give you TWO movies for the price of ONE!

MEET
At Tempe Beach Park, 6:30 pm on Friday May 21st. We ride at 7 pm, first showtime is at 8.
The ride is a short 3.5 mile easy cruise to the West Wind Scottsdale 6, located at 8101 E McKellips in Scottsdale.

Stick around for both movies or only one, riders will be escorted back to Tempe after the credits roll.

What to bring: A BIKE, a blanket (trust us, it gets cold out there after dark), Lights, Cash, and an FM Radio.

What to leave: Flip flops, pets, crying children, and petrol-guzzling engines!

Recommended extras: A tire patch kit & pump, a beachball or frisbee, camp chair, footie pajamas, water. Whatever else you want to pack!

We ALWAYS get asked the question, “What’s showing?” The answer is – don’t worry, we’ll decide when we get there! Remember, this ride is more about the fun of being on a bike at the movies and having a great time. After all, the best drive-in movies are the corniest, right? But if you’re burning to know… check westwinddriveins.com for the latest updates. We’ll throw some ideas out there as we get closer.

See you then!

edit:

Wichita, KS. We try to get out to the movies as much as we can. Our drive in has two screens so there is usually something good showing. If we had gone Friday, Saturday, or Sunday (since Monday was a holiday) then "How to Train Your Dragon" would have started after "Iron Man 2".
