O.K. so after several years and several wheels as well, my online spoke calculator disappears into cyber-space! I'm pretty sure there are some cats here building wheels, hopefully you will be so kind to share your resources. I have found and used another with less than stellar results. I am pretty sure with a couple of tweeks, the one I found can be made to work. But experience has proven to be the best teacher, so lay yours on me please!

I use EDD

I do prefer to either take my own measurements, or use manufacturer specs, b/c a lot of the saved specs are user-generated, and not everyone who uses EDD seems to know what's up.

I sometimes "check my work" at the prowheelbuilder site:

The figures usually come i=out the same, at least to a tenth of a mm....

Thanks so much for the replies, I actually used a couple of these. There was the rare occasion I did an offset build. These that you dudes have shown were really helpful in that circumstance. However, that is not the norm. for me. It works out that my site is back up. The owner of the site simply forgot to pay his domain name fees. Good news for me! I will share the info, you dudes can give it a try and tell me what you think. spokelength.com is the site, thanks again for your time/info.

Calculator looks interesting, but tring to come up with way to measure the inputs looks tough, any good source of simple diagrams to measure hub and wheel?

Horsefarmer, this page explains it as well as any, and provides some tips on measurement technique. It helps to keep in mind that these measurements are estimates and that we're not, after all, working on a wristwatch. Digital calipers make the job easier, but a ruler can suffice, provided you're creative.

I take it wheelbuilding is as much art as science?

I doubt anyone would mistake MY wheel builds for artwork, but a certain degree of craftsmanship doesn't hurt. About the best advice I can offer is to be relaxed but deliberate in your approach.

Grab a sacrificial wheel off a junker and use it for practice. You will mess up for sure the first few times, but will learn from the stumbles. Soon, your builds will be neither art nor science, but wizardry.
