Hey ! iam back ! its been a year i havent done any bikes ..
after moving/renos/new job/first car
..iam in need of creation,
so iam back to fix despair , or should i say DeSpare!

i dont even have i game plan , i pretty much found a old spare tire on the side of the road i thought would make a cool bike tire . and i need a custom pedal ride for Montreal tour de l'ile the 26th of this month :39: this is what ive done so far today(day1)

so yeah, iam using a headtube/headset as hub , and 1 1/8'steerer tube as axle .. gonna try a secound attempt at a mono chain stay
..this time bigger and better :39:well i hope.

i eye balled the 5spoke star patern , the center resting on a ducktape roll , the ends on little pieces of wood ...
they arent inline, they are angled a little bit just for style.
then i grinded away the 1/8'' eccess i left on the spokes like shown in the pic below.

Cool.

Using the headtube/headset as hub is a great idea. :praise: I'll be using that idea in the future for sure

Glen.
wait and see if it actually works lol , maybe no good over time these little bearings . fingers crossed

You know I like this! Looks like it spins pretty straight in the video!

That is the only thing that would worry me, or maybe the bearing cups oval-ling slightly, but easy to replace them if they do wear out!
Love the name too, welcome back!

soo i went a bit quick on calculations , i had to change the offset of the hub/head tube , meaning i chopped one side and welded it on the other side.
result is good offset!
unfortunately i now have a light wave(not 100% true anymore) of about 1/16'' ..rip . not that bad but disappointing

i then proceeded to make a cone shape out of the steerer tube/axle . just triangles cut out and beaten with the hammer +welded

so rear wheel building is done!
on to making the mono chain stay/frame witch don't really have any idea how it should look like :39: but i want to use that biga#$ tube you can see in previous pictures, its off my neighbors old elliptical thingy :113:
:forum:

Cool! Looking forward to seeing how you mount and drive it, they always seem to be the parts I struggle to make look good.
well there will be a fixed sproket on the hub thats for sure , still debating if i do a 3speed hub jackshaft or leave it fixed on a easy gearing .. jackshaft would sure help chainalignment without having to modify the crank width , but not sure how good it can look :forum::39:

Some progress today!
-ive cut the big tubes to make them as one and drilled a big hole for the tube the hub mounts on , so there is my mono chainstay/top tube

not sure how i managed this , but i just eyeballed the holes positions on both sides and it ended up only 1mm of in alignment ,so after ajustting with a file , it got welded

ive cut the center out a cog , then i chucked the 3speed hub in the lathe to reduce one of the flanges diameter , welded cog on it , cleaned it up a bit , and a coat of silver.
20190514_141219.jpg

so thats my 3speed jackshaft . i will run it backwards , all left sided chains , crank will drive the cog on the hub part wich will drive the regular cog to the wheel . this will actually make the gears reversed too . no pull on the lever is lower gear
20190514_150259.jpg

then i tacked a disk brak spacer on a plate of steel , i will drill and tap the holes and cut it round and hollow to make a disk mount for the other side of the jackshaft hub

i had fun with the tire lettering .. 420 use only .. A tire
use to say : temporary use only ... 420bar ... spare tire
20190514_174035.jpg

oh and welded a cog on the hub ;)

Won't you lose the ability to freewheel if you drive the hub shell? I don't see a freewheel in your system.
it does keep the freewheel ability , its even better cause only the cog will freewheel instead of the whole 3speed hub :)

I'm always amazed at how fluid your builds are and the quality of your welds and workmanship. Keep it coming!
Thanks :)
quality of my welds :39::rofl: sometimes . not most times :headbang:

Beautiful wheel! It's always cool to see your artistry at play in these build offs!
