Hey everyone,
Picked up this custom frame built by Rev106, in the style of a late 70’s Motomag. Named the bike Tres (03) since it’s #3 of 10.
I thought this one is build thread worthy. Here’s what I’m working with.
Frame - Has some rough edges that need touching up and I’m debating on actually taking it to get professionally painted. Color choice is still up in the air.

Mongoose double clamp stem -

Bendix 76 and high flanged Schwinn hub on S2 rims - They’ll be laced up with new spokes, hubs serviced and buffed out.

Cr-Mo 175 Cranks and a 44T Mongoose Snowflake -

Schwinn Sidewinder Forks -

Here’s a rough draft of what it’s looking like.

I’m eyeing a set of Al’s Rapid Red Transit bars, but those seem a bit cruiser-esque.

Made a few recent trades and that pushed the build for Tres along pretty quick.

Nice build. Whats the top tube length? 8.5-9" 28" wide bars are about right for most adults on a 20".

I’ll have to measure the top tube and let you know. I put the bike aside for now, middle of a move.

I’m looking for a set of v-bars with a 9” rise, not worried about the length since I can always extend them.

Al's Rapid Transit has 9" V-bars that look old school. DK has the Chamberlain Pro V-bars that are 9.8" rise, but a much shallower V. Redline had a 40th anniversary V-bar, but only 8"...and by all reports, crappy chrome.

If your looking for vintage v-bars...I'm raiding a contacts bmx hoard next weekend, I can keep an eye out .

I was thinking of going with the Al’s Rapid V-Bars. I like the Chamberlain bars too, subtle V on those. But the rapid bars will pop more for sure. Buddy has a set of the redlines and he said the same about the chrome.

I’m not stuck on vintage over new, building era correct can get pricey and will take a while to build a bicycle. For me at least. But I knew from the beginning v bars were a must for this ride.

I moved and finally got settled in to give a small update. Finally picked up my Nongoose sticker kit. Also, I was considering get the chrome blasted off of my forks but I think I will stick with metallic red bike with chrome forks like the one pictured below. Thanks for looking.

Another small update, Carlisle gum wall knobby tires. They are all show and no go though. One of tires is starting to harden, is there a way to soften it up or is the tire eventually going to be doomed?

Thanks

Was gonna mock up the Nongoose today and one thing led to another and I built it up and rode it around for a bit. Found those hefty tires at a LBS. They’re big but are noted as 26x2.35.
I’m adding about 4 inches on each side of the CW bars. Looks kinda goofy right now, but with the lengthening it should even out, I think.

I’m gonna ride it unpainted for a while I think. Or until I find some chrome forks with a long head tube. In the meantime those sunlite ones will do.
