There is a seller on Ebay who has machined rear cogs to make newer hubs into skiptooths. Maybe I am late on this bandwagon, maybe not. I have it in my hands, I put it on a Nexus hub and a Sturmey (a little more effort somehow than the Nexus). I ran in through a couple chains with no problems. There was another listed, but I just bought it. maybe there will be abother soon. The seller is "skiptooth2" and the listing is "Vintage Bicycle Sprocket Prewar Bike Rat Bike Shimano ".

you can but if youre running a real 1" pitch chain the cog width is 1/8" and a 1/2" pitch chain is 1/16"(these are just eye ball measurements...i didnt break out the mic and measure so i may be 1/64" off) so a skip on a standard cog will have some side play....as for advantage of running a 1" chain....there isnt any other than it has a cool sound and its not seen on every bike nowadays
