BMW R26 Gas Tank Repair

Postby whg1635 on Wed Jun 06, 2012 8:51 am

I've got a TINY crack in the weld in the bottom of my BMW R26 gas tank. I tried JB Weld to fix it, and that worked for a few years but it recently started leaking again. Is there a better product to use? It is a very small area on the exterior bottom of the tank around a mounting hole. Thanks!

It doesn't matter what I paid for it, it matters what it's WORTH. I never buy anything I will regret KEEPING.

If you do use a sealer of some sort make sure not to get any on the outside of the tank, that stuff destroys paint.

I've never used the Eastwood sealer. I have used Kreem and ended up having problems with it after a couple of years (it didn't like alcohol in gas and started flaking off in gummy balls). Messed up my carbs...

The last thing I used was a 2 part epoxy from Caswell plating. It made the inside of the tank look like the inside of a thermos! I really like it and it has held for over 5 years, still looks new.

Good luck, Rg
