$12.00

Postby jjmunster on Fri Nov 30, 2007 6:21 am

This all started at an auction when I won this green thing for $12.00. Most everyone thought I was nuts, but I wanted to build my first bike. I had an idea of what I wanted, but my family just thought I was nuts. Comments about my purchase varied, but mainly....I was nuts. This is the FIRST bike that I have ever built. Wanted something cruizer, rat rod style, but something that I could ride. After I started stripping the green paint, which was on almost everything, I knew I was in for a project. Finally had to use aircraft adhesive remover to get rid of all the paint. After all the paint was off, found out that it was a 1955 M/W Hawthorne. After quite some time, it finally became a true vision when I had the chance to finally ride in the Halloween parade with most of my family(thanks Rick). Looking forward to my second build. John. That's a cool story. Great job on the bike, this was definitely a diamond in the rough waiting to pop out from underneath that green paint. :D

I was truly amazed at what was under all that green paint. After stripping it completely and seeing the metal work that was under it all, this was a cool bike to start with. The green paint was even on the chain! Forgot to mention that it was painted with Krylon flat black primer, matches my little parts truck in one of the finished pics. The tank is being used for another project already. It was pretty beat up, one side was almost completely caved in. Good way to learn metal working. John.

Nice build by the way. We had similar visions for this frame I see. I think I like yours better though.

Simple, clean and beautiful. I'll take a bike that can be ridden a long distance any day. Great job!
