Re: Hiawatha InnovatorCan someone tell me, if I soak the chain guard in oxalic acid will the acid eat the painted decal off? There is small surface rust spots surrounding a lot of the outline of the decal and not sure how to remove it without ruining the paint.
Re: Hiawatha InnovatorThat is awesome for a $20 score.
I missed out ona BMX last weekend at one of those sales for $5 but I said I don't have the money yet but when I got back they sold it anyway so they couldn't wait 10 minutes. ![]()
Re: Hiawatha InnovatorNice find!
It doesn't matter what I paid for it, it matters what it's WORTH. I never buy anything I will regret KEEPING.
Re: Hiawatha InnovatorThanks guys. I ended up stripping it down last night and soaking all the parts but the chain guard (see post above why). Front hub was bent (replaced with new), the rear wheel has a broken spoke (fixed that also), and swapped the sissy bar with a cleaner original one that was also thrown in with the deal (seat also but is junk). This bike was held for me at no charge but I threw the kid $10 for my gratitude.
Re: Hiawatha InnovatorThe reflector on the rear wheel is cool

Re: Hiawatha Innovatorto answer your question-I use cheapo Dollar General SOS type soap pads on chrome and paint. It will remove all your rust and leave a scratch free chrome finish.Wont harm paint unless you get aggressive.Go lightly around those edges and youll get off the area you asked about.
If you need examples I can put up pics of entire bikes (paint) and numerous chainguards done this way.
Re: Hiawatha Innovatorhere ya go
guard before ![]() guard after ![]() I used cheap SOS pads on this bikes entire frame to remove brown pasty gunk. After a wax it shines like new paint. ![]() same guard as yours done the same way, this one was pretty bad. ![]()
Re: Hiawatha Innovatorthats a great find for 20 bucks.. and its got bar bike wheels... you can ride it to the bar
have a few .. and ride it home .. ya dont fall down.. I love the smell of fresh barn finds in the morning
Re: Hiawatha InnovatorThanks for the help Xcruiser. Guess its time to pick up so SOS pads....always used steel wool but I don't think that would be a good idea in this case. As far as the reflector goes...that's one of the first things I noticed on this bike after seeing someone else on this forum have one also. Pretty neat little Kellogs prize. I'm also thinking of leaving the 'bar bike wheels' on it since it doesn't have a kickstand. Will be posting pics on Monday after I finish cleaning it up so check back!
Re: Hiawatha InnovatorGet the cheap dollar store pads, they seem to be less abrasive.
Enjoy bud!!
Re: Hiawatha Innovator
and if ya pass out--youll just sit there for a while and wont fall over
Re: Hiawatha InnovatorIm working on stripping a buzz bike like that right now, cool bikes
Re: Hiawatha InnovatorIs that a 16inch or 20inch??
Re: Hiawatha Innovator & updated Fresh Bikes (5/30/12)^^Its a 20 inch bike^^ Here is my after pics of cleaning the bike over the weekend. I forgot to put back on my cool reflector but make certain it will be on it. Also had a parts Murray bike with some old white pedals that I thought would look good on this. The tires are off a bmx but fits the ok at the moment. Will restore this with a slick at the rear and street brick tire up front when the funds rebuild.
