'38 Schwinn Motorbike

Postby ohdeebee on Fri Mar 16, 2012 2:55 pm

I'm doing some paint and wheel work for a buddy of mine. This bike came from a barn not far from me and I had known about it for years. Problem is it was never for sale. He was finally able to do some swapping and rescue it from the constant bombardment of bird crap. Although I've been painting since I was 15 (I'm 26 now),this is my first time pinstriping by hand and so far so good. I get fatigued pretty quickly so it's been a work in progress. All of the darts were laid out by hand also just as they were at the factory. This bike is going to be aged once its done so every layer of paint has to be factory correct to get the right look.

I guess I didn't take any pics of the frame after it was striped but I'll add some too along with the fenders once they're done. Let me know what you think!

36 motorbike has a straight downtube. Could be a 36-up autocycle or 38-up(?) motorbike

Good job though. I'm about to start on a 36 motorbike w/locking fork, so I'll be learning from your thread. Mine's been just sitting for awhile, waiting for a few parts. I really don't want to start until I have it at least 95% there.

You're correct Ozz. Sometimes I go from what the customer tells me and not what I know. It must be a '38. It's got the big Hi-lo brake and the earlier serial number stamping. I'll keep posting pics as the project moves along. I've got the wheels done also but they need to be polished up a bit.

Decals are going on tomorrow. Fenders are in the works. I'll probably knock back the frame paint a little more but we'll see once the metal parts are polished. Feedback welcome!

That top dart on the top tube looks short in the pic. It must be the angle I was holding it at. Also the red didn't really show up well in the pics. I'll try and post more tomorrow once I have the decals on. Thanks for all the encouragement guys! If anyone would like me to do any work for them just let me know. I like doing this sort of stuff so I'll do it pretty cheap. I'll always take trades in exchange for paint jobs or wheel building also.

Decals are on now. I'll age them once they are cured on to the frame. Here are some better shots of the paint and aging process as well. Looks pretty close to original paint to me. I've fooled everyone that's seen the frame in person so far.

Its starting to look like a bike again! Tank and rack are in the works, but will need paint when they arrive. I'll be striping the front fender this week and adding all of the doodads as I go.

looks great, I cant wait to see it finished. The hand pinstripe makes it look authentic.
But then again, I could be totally wrong.
