Dirty South Klunk (Update 11/02/08) FIN!

Postby blink on Mon Oct 20, 2008 2:30 pm

so here is the frame...
all i know about it is that its a Monark.
looked to be the perfect frame for a klunker.
Image
its got the original blade fork, which should work well.
Image
i am getting these bars / stem this weekend from a buddy with an 83 Schwinn High Sierra he is giving me.
(not actual photo, got it from flickr)
Image
tires - 24" x 1.85" Maxxis Holy Rollers.
Image
normal mtb cage pedals with clips n straps, eleven81 makes em
Image
Kool Chain by KMC - i love this chain!
Image

i have to dig up the following from the bike dungeon....
- crankset, have a NOS one somewhere (got it, see below)
- chainring, might use the original Monark one. i like the design on it. (got it, see below)
- seatpost (got it)
- saddle, i have an old heavy duty 3 spring one that should be great. (got it, see below)

i will post some more photos and maybe a mock-up after i rummage the dungeon.

this is fun!

well, the monark chainring is a bust. i could not get it off the crank.
i think this one is from a schwinn. 46 teeth.

Dang, i feel kinda stupid now.
i got the front wheel cleaned up a bit and went to put on my 24" holy rollers.
i find out that these wheels are really 26".

they looked like 24s cuz they didnt have any tires on them i guess.

so i have some Schwalbe Fat Franks that i bought for my flightliner but they were too wide.....
they are not very knobby, but look cool. i may keep them, may change em out.

i raced mountain bikes as a teen, and my favorite tires were the panaracer Dart and Smoke.
they stopped making them for a few years, but are back out. might pick up some of them.

doesn't look like a Klunker with those Fat Franks on there... I think you should sell them to me ;-)

man, after some searching the web i have not been able to find an all cream/tan/skin MTB/ATB tire.
i wish i had held on to the ones i rode when i was 16.
dont remember who made them, but they were all cream and were kevlar.
awesome tires.

dang......hrmmmmmmm.....

FYI, that's a Columbia/Westfield frame. Most Monarks didn't have a second color on the front of the frame, the ones that did had a straight V shape. Also, the closest thing Monark had to a straightbar frame was the Rocket, but the second bar was slightly curved. I have a Columbia frame around here somewhere which has the same frame darts, they look like little post hole diggers! I'll be the 1st to admit that the two frame styles are very similar, especially over the rear wheel. I'm just saying, not pickin on ya! :) ~Adam

Yup...1/2" and 9/16" threads...generally for OPC and three piece respectively.
