29er tires? What wheel size?

Postby Retrogee on Fri May 18, 2012 8:59 pm

I'm digging this look! (onyx brand 29er cruiser sold at Walmart ) Can a 29 tire go on a 26" wheel? Can this look be gotten on an old cruiser? Not willing to pay $180 for a Walmart bike !
Just wondering what would be involved! Thanks !

I really don't think the 29 inch tires would fit on a 26 inch rim. And you *might* be able to squeeze 29 inch wheels and tires onto an old frame, but it would be by the skin of your teeth
When purchasing from me, remember I live 15 miles from the post office.

This build is based on putting 29er rims on a 26" frame. http://www.ratrodbikes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=67&t=57153

29er have a larger diameter than 26" wheels, so they won't fit on the 26" rims at all.

26" mtb/ballooner is ISO 559 dia.. 29er is 700c rim, ISO 622 dia.. Takes a wide range of tires from roadie to the aforementioned 29". :|
it's all about the bikes, man. viewtopic.php?f=6&t=50053
I was going to update my sig line, but I'm not seein' anything worth plagiarizing right now.

I saw an ad somewhere that Walmart was selling a men's 26" with a really thick tire...can't find it now, of course!

True, the 29er rim is a 700c, but the width is considerably wider than a roadie/cyclocross version. I wouldn't use a rim with an internal width less than 22mm for proper fit of a 2+" mtb tire and something in the 25-35mm range is more appropriate.

Saw one today! The tire is a 29x2.0, and the wheel is 700x54c. Too bad the bike is $179!
