'47 Western Flyer Rat

Postby udallcustombikes on Sat Aug 18, 2012 8:36 am

I start feeling edgy when I don't have a ratty beater in my stable ever since I built my first- This '51 Columbia
Image

I had to sell the Columbia when things got tight.

Then I built my '34 Colson Flyer Rat
First build
Image

I decided to use it for my RRB7 bike since I had this '61 Schwinn Hornet Rat
Image

The Schwinn got sold to raise some cash for my Rat rod Truck
Image

Last night I found myself awake at 4:30 and unable to get back to sleep so I decided to build this '47 CWC built Western Flyer I picked up from 450redrider earlier this week.

Looks good ! i also have the need to keep at least one rat bike around, like the fact you were able to sell some bike stuff to fund a Truck , thats not easy to do in this economy these days .

I added a few more parts- chain guard, light and the custom rack. I also swapped the rusted steel seat pan for a well patina'd leather saddle.

I am contemplating adding fenders and I am going to swap the wheels and tires for something else. I have already built the rear wheel, just need to find a suitable front hub.

I decided to go ahead and mount the fenders up this afternoon.

I got out this morning and swapped the tires on the bike. I decided to leave the wheel set on the bike. The front hub is a '37 BSA branded Sturmey Drum brake (original to my tandem) and the rear is a Sachs Torpedo DuoMatic kick back two speed.

I snapped some pics of the bike in the morning light before starting.

I was walking through the garage when I spied these Thick Bricks on a bike that I had built up for one ride last summer. The next thing I knew I was swapping wheels on the Flyer.

That looks cool buddy! I haven't forgotten that I still have that rat light for you either, just been busy at work shoveling snow for the last week! :( (couldn't find a smilie for "dead tired"!) The tires look awesome on there & I still want that tank! 8)

I took a ride this evening since we have more winter storms rolling in this weekend. I took advantage of the lighting and some unique locations near the house.
