How do you upload avatar pics?

Every single pic I've tried to upload as my avatar is rejected, I'm assuming they're to big. Does anyone know how to go about shrinking them?

In your photo file, go to edit, then in image, skew will let you downsize it until it gets small enough for the 80 x 80 avatar size. I save it and look to see how small it is and go from there.
