40's Schwinn?

Postby DeuceWheeler on Tue Jul 24, 2012 12:57 pm

The Girlfriend and I were heading out to grab dinner and she saw my old Hiawatha cruiser and said "I love it, I have always wanted an old girls bike like that with a basket, etc..."
So, I waited a couple days and found this on Craigslist. Guy said he got it from his Grandmas barn and that she thought it was purchased in the 40's. I gave him $40 for it. It appears to be all there.
She was beyond stoked and loved that it had patina.

Basket is a wald
front badge is oval metal, red with Schwinn running down vertically
Coaster brake is a Bendix
Serial # is H242517

Any ideas guys?

Looks to be in very good shape. Just tear it down and regrease it.

Get some polish and buff that thing out! The red always pops on those things!

Very similar to the 1947 I rebuilt for my wife. Same chainguard, frame and fork. Great riding, solid bikes. Can easily put on a modern wheelset if there are issues with those.

I did ours as a drum-brake equipped 5-speed but that's kind of overkill. This was generally sold at the time as simply the "Schwinn for ladies". Probably officially a model DX- unequipped model (meaning no headlight).

Best of luck with it.

Thanks for the replies everyone, much appreciated.
She likes the worn/patina look. I told her if she wanted it cleaned up and painted, we could do that.
I'll leave it up to her.
