i had a shiney chrome chainring i wanted to use.
i found some chrome BB hardward from some bike i stripped and a nice new crank off another. still had the right and left stickers on it.

i knew the frame was ruff, but oh, man was it ruff. i got it media blasted last week. it was worse than i though. it looks like it was handled by the samsonite gorilla and than tossed into a lake for 20 years
i welded up a couple cracks and primered it. after sanding for 2 1/2 hours i realized it would take 2 days to make this frame look perfect, so i'm just gonna paint it now. the wind started to pick up and it looked like rain, so i rushed and ran the paint. i'll wet sand the whole thing and re-paint it friday and final assy this weekend.

I want to build a set of truss rods but I want them to be functional. being new to this stuff I have to ask:

a) are truss rods on old bikes functional? did they actually take some of the road chatter out?

b) how do they work? I can't quite tell from the photos if there is a swivel bracket for the front wheel or what?

great work. looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

Nope, they don't really do anything. So if you make them feel free to make them light.

However, they will keep a hanging basket from rubbing the headtube! :D

I disagree. The truss rods on your bike are functional. Their function is to look cool! Nice job.

Some of them act as wheel safeties, some people claim that they reduce flex. I could see that in some designs, others clearly don't do jack. They are usually just clamped down with the wheel nuts.

Original ones are almost never as well made as the ones in this thread. Just thin tubes with a flattened spot w/a hole for the axle.
