They are the chain piece that sticks out of a Sturmey archer 3 speed hub(sticks out of the axle literally) and everytime you shift, that little chain is pulled and you then switch gears.

if your patient enough you can sell them on E bay one at a time and make a killing..
or you can try and sell them here...
