Western Flyer and Schwinn frames

Postby Peatbog on Sun May 27, 2012 4:14 pm

I scored a Western Flyer and two Schwinn frames yesterday and it was only a two hour round trip--well a two hour round trip twice since on the first trip the seller wasn't available:

I really no nothing about vintage bikes like these, but I liked the shape of the frames, so I nabbed them even though I probably paid a bit too much.

The Western Flyer was $85 whilst the Schwinn frames were $25 each. These were just the guy's cast offs he didn't want. He had oodles of stuff he wasn't selling that he is fixing up himself.
I tried being serious, but it was boring.

OK, first let me say you did great - don't worry. The top pic is a post war 1940's Cleveland Welding built Western Flyer. You can triple your money easily with the parts - probably more. The bare frame may be a Schwinn - I don't know - I don't do Schwinns. The other frame with some parts on it is also a Cleveland Welding frame and the parts on it are also Cleveland Welding. I don't know what condition the frames are in but if there is no damage and no rust down to the bare metal the CWC frames go for $50 - $70 just the bare frame. The Schwinn in like condition will go for more. You did extremely well - enjoy! Robert

Thanks Schwinnray.

Roadmaster, thanks for all that information. I have always wanted frames with this shape, but never had the chance to buy any. There really isn't much of this stuff around where I live that I ever see for sale. The guy had the Western Flyer on craigslist and when I went to look at it, the other two frames were in a pile outside his garage on top of some old kid's bikes. He wanted $100 for the bike and $60 for the frames, but took the lower price. I actually figured I paid too much, but was afraid if I walked away, I'd not find anymore like them for a long time, so I bought them. All of the frames are solid. The Western Flyer would be a rider except the coaster brake doesn't brake--it only coasts. :P

By the way, imagine the head tube badge you use for an avatar, only upside down and changed some.

Yep, an upside down Road Master badge was my inspiration.

You were quite fortunate to get both frames with the sweeping top bars - most people agree those are Cleveland Welding's best looking frames. I'm sure you'll be able to find something to do with them. Looks like good things come to those that wait. Have Fun! Robert

The bare frame indeed looks like a post war Schwinn DX. These frames are desireable because you can get a repop tank for them. Worth around $100 if it's straight and solid. Gary

Good score.
What kind of hub does the Western Flyer have?
If it’s too shallow then dig it more deep
If it’s too narrow then dig it more wide
If you see a point of light
Shake hands with the other side

That's kinda cool. I'll have to look up those tanks, but I like the frame naked so much, I don't know what I'll do yet.

It's dirty and rusty yet, but it looks like "Eclipse Machine Co." is on it.
