My first Monark! Score from weekends bike swap / Lincoln NE

Postby rustyford5 on Mon Jun 04, 2012 9:45 am

Hi all, Thought I would share pics of an old Monark that I picked up this weekend! I have always wanted one, and in a strike of luck I purchased this one early for a really low price! Needless to say I love it more than my wife does as she gave me the skunk-eye when I pulled it out of the back of our minivan upon arriving home! It looks like I will need a suitable set of wheels for sure, and if anyone has a lead on a tank/fender light let me know!

I have a train light.. but it doesn't have the guts in it. Just the cover and switch.

it might not have come with a train light so hold on before buying 1. can you take a picture of the front fender holes were the light would go?

Nick.

Thanks Nick!
That would really bum me out as I LOVE the way those train lights look! I will get a picture when I return home from work tonight. It has a series of screw holes in a triangle toward the front, and another single hole in toward the rear closer to the head-tube. Is there a good way to figure out a year on old Monarks? I have always loved them, just never thought I would track one down as we don't see many in this area.

It could have come with either the train light or a pedestal style light. The pedestal lights are super hard to find and usually bring big bucks when they popo up for sale.

Yeah, I noticed that! I expected it to be the other way around with the train lights being the harder piece to find. I sure like the look of those more personally. I would love to build mine up like another member here.....this one is a beauty!

I'm not a Monark guy but I do know that if the chain guard attaches to the frame like yours at the back, it is the older style...like late 40's. Sometime after that, they changed it and it attaches to the seat stays with a screw instead of a clamp. Neat find. Gary

A beauty...with skirt guards off of a girls bike. 8) They look cool now but I'll bet back in 1950 no boy would have been caught dead with a pair of girls skirt guards on his bike. :P Gary

Thanks Gary! Good point about the skirt guards.....very art-deco, but not manly at all! Because I don't want to be jumped by the guys in the neighborhood I'll pass on the skirt guards! :D

I believe yours didn't come with a tank, but if you could find one and the headshroud, you could make it into a super deluxe!
When purchasing from me, remember I live 15 miles from the post office.
