giving a bike a bad paint job doesnt make it a rat rod it just makes you a bad painter.

that bike looks great and i'm sure this one you are working on will look as equal or better. im commenting on the idea that people deliberately painting their bikes horribly or throwing on flat black and calling it "rat rod". The idea of "rat rodding" which is a term i dont like to use, is the idea of working on the cheap but making a hot rod. It doesnt excuse the lack of patience or craftsmanship you see in most of these ratted out cars and bikes. original rodders were very skilled in creating unique and fast cars. now it seems to be just about that look. Without the rust, soul, and craftsmanship, you are left with flat black paint and redundant red wheels. I can't wait to see what you do with this bike, i love the color. I hope you understand the point i'm making.

I agree completely this is why I jokingly wrote the little comming attraction trailer this morning. however too many look a bit too polished. I wanted the bike green and didn't have any paint on the bike so I decided to make a patina'd green. I painted over the crap existing on the bike so I'd have some patina left when i was done. after painting I simply went over the whole thing with 500 grit wet sand paper and voila! instant patina as the rust and old paint started showing up again. sadly I lost the spider web in the sanding process.
(Side note: Paint dries fast when it's 110° outImage)
sadly Idon't know if I can capture the actual flavor of it but I'll try here is a blurry closeup of the top tube for reference.

and a sneak preview! (it's not quite done yet but were zeroing in on tokyo!)

And then just as it looked that Godzilla was unstoppable, a deadly Typhoon appeared on the radar.

Dont fret too much over that paint. It'll be gone when Typhoon Mary and I goes blistering by on our way to the podium to grab the statue and kiss the girl!

Paint looks great man as does the whole bike. Wasn't Godzilla brought to shore by a typhoon in that movie with Mothra?

too funny I watched about a dozen Godzilla videos this morning on you tube. actually this is the first Rat Rod I've built and am just having fun building it and making fun of myself with all the Godzilla stuff. I'm noticing I'm not doing as much fabricating as most guys. I'm just going through the junk pile and picking and choosing parts. I hope no one is getting offended with all the smash talk. most of the bikes are looking pretty stout competition wise, though some of the guys are kinda holding their hands close and being sorta quiet. I really want to build one of the leaf spring springers after seeing the one in the build off! that Blue oyster cult song has been going through my head all day as I was working on the bike. it must be the heat.

little bit of trivia for ya, henry Ford found several financial backers to finance his new motor car company, The Henry Ford Company, and then took the money and put it into what would eventually become his 999 racer and never built the cars he was supposed to. when the financial backers got tired of waiting for a return on their investment they sued and won control of the company and hired a guy named Henry M. Leland and changed the name to The Cadillac Automobile Company. ford took his racer plans and hit the road and the rest is history. oh it went 91.37mph (probably not fast enough to outrun Godzilla anyway.)

Great bike man. I was debating on fixing some scratches on my pretty paint caused by "accidents", what was I thinking! Thanks for bringing me and The Chief back on the right track.
