Picked up a 2003 Schwinn Heavy Duty at an outdoor flea market today. It was first first purchased locally. There’s a little rust here and there, pretty good paint but worthy of some clean-up and a few part swaps.

Rear hub coaster brake issues. Probably why it was up for sale. Need to take it apart to see what’s going on.

I took the rear hub apart the brake shoes didn’t seem to be seated correctly and worn along with the clutch. I put it back together correctly, ride pretty smooth with air in tires and oil on chain.
I plan to replace the brake shoes and clutch assembly.
the stem was rust stuck, did manage to get it out. I tried a couple of different bars on it. Keyed in on cross braced Columbia’s with Thompson grips.
still need to wash it.

Bought a China Huffy from Mallwart couple years ago. Hub was copy of Shimano design and it kept buzzing when coasting, even after I pulled it apart and lubed it. Consensus was beat it a little - hard application of the brake would speed parts getting warn down and bedded in. It worked.

The new brake shoes and clutch assembly arrived as we were returning from a wedding in Chadron, NE. Finally got around to cleaning up the coaster brake hub parts today. I got it all assembled and it rides like a new bike.

On the way to Chadron we stopped at Carhenge.

There are supposed to be some good MTB trails near Chadron. Haven't been, yet.
1260 mile round trip. Maybe Pine Ridge area. Lots of big hills or small mountains and trees with rattlesnakes. No bike shops so not sure about trails, usually good trails have some support.

The whole state of Nebraska has fewer MTB trails than the county that I reside in. Even so, the Chadron area has what's probably the highest concentration of trails in the state. An acquaintance of mine was planning on opening a bike shop up there a couple of years ago, but family issues forced him to abandon that plan...for now. From what I understand, the trails up there that are legal for bikes are in need of some TLC. The fact that it's a college town, on somewhat of a beeline from I-80 to The Black Hills, and already has trails in place are what he's banking on.
