This is the crank off of a Schwinn lil chik. How do I read the date?

Is that a "68" in the upper-left? That would be my guess--1968.
Thanks. If that is correct then this lil chik I just picked up is not all original. The serial number is on the head tube and starts with LMxxxxxx which indicates Nov 1976. Hummmm...

I'd sooner believe the headtube stamp as accurate. Who knows for sure what those casting numbers mean? Sometimes the information is obvious, others not so much.

Examine the badge for four tiny numbers that may or may not be stamped there. If present, they will corroborate the Julian date and year of your bike's manufacture.

It's the older cranks that show the year, usually an "AS" followed by 2 digits. (Arnold and Schwinn). However, I've taken some cranks off that didn't, or had a bunch of numbers that didn't make sense. The serial number is the way to go.

Yes there is 4 numbers stamped on the head badge 3366. So that would be the 336th day of 1976? That would coordinte with the serial number starting with LM

Cool! It has s7 rims but i don't see any other markings that would indicate a date. Nor did I find any numbers or letters on the forks, unfortunately the forks are cracked and can't be reused. But even the inner tubes have yellow ink stamp original equipment made in usa.

Schwinn handlebars sometimes have an identifier hidden at the clamp point. It might be worth a check, if you're curious enough.

I will check them too. Thanks!

Ok, I feel really stupid right now, but I'm going to admit to my mistake...when I took the crank out and disassembled it I saw the strange looking numbers on it. ( that's when I asked for help here to decipher the code....) well it turns out that upon cleaning it I found the date code on the opposite side! SA 23 76. It is the original crank set. Unfortunately the chrome is too far gone on one side to clean up so it will go in the spare parts pile.
