So i traded some leftover parts from my other Polish bikes that I already built/tore down/repaired with a kid named Alan from nearby City of Góra Kalwaria. It was a nice nostalgia trip for me, since he's already into restoring/building bikes, and he's in simmilar age as I started my hobby :cool2: (like 13 or so). He also found a bike that I always wanted at a local junkyard. So i bought it from him, packed it to my tiny Daewoo, and drove today to my workshop.

It is/was/should be a 24" wheel folder made by Romet in 1984 that went by the name Jubilat(eng - Birthday Boy) - a "bigger brother" of the super popular Wigry. When new it should look kinda like this one:
fc54d5164fafb64f428c0eb50127

And on my way to the shop I figured out that I might as well make it into Muscle Bike for the Build-Off (You don't see a lot of those right? The only one I found were Rollfast bikes)

Still need to figure out a name for this one, but I hope it will come to me (or maybe some of you will have a cool suggestion :bigboss:)

So back to the menu. Got it to my workshop, fitted it into a stand...

....and by that time I realised that this is by far the worst bike that ever went trough my hands, like even junkyard-bad is not the proper way to describe this one...

It's covered in tons of paint, EVERYWHERE, like literally every part that was made of any kind of steel (or plastic) was at least once painted.
74661782_2380783758700258_666879224157569024_n.jpg

Wheels, stem, steering bar (mismatched wheels to be precise) painted silver, righ onto the rust, and everything else just painted over a milion times.

Yeah, even the plastic parts weren't saved...

Also almost everything is wobbly - the wheels, headset, pedals, I thought that the only not wobbly part is the BB, and yes - not wobbly, but when I turned it it stops after a half turn, and when you push it it makes a sound like something is cracking inside it...

Literally everything that isn't rusted-shut and won't move from tons of layers of paint, or rust, came apart in pieces. Generator - stuck shut, Steereing Bar - stuck on rust (Actually it took me some time to remove it), Stem - rust shut, Seat post - came out after 30min of using the Raw Slav Muscle Power:showingbiceps:, Front Fender - rust shut, Rear Fender - Rust Shut, Rack - you guessed it - rust shut, Wedge from the BB Axle - Rust shut, Headset Nuts - rust shut... The chain... oh, don't even get me started on that one...

I haven't seen a sprocket so eaten up my whole life...

73323476_2380783918700242_5545886317780402176_n.jpg

The rear reflector is CCCP made, and it was one of the few parts that came of easily...

73241818_2380783955366905_6993558929556897792_n.jpg

One thing is good - people on the countryside are lazy, so they didn't paint it inside, so after a while, when it folded I was amazed to see the original color inside - deep blue I think.

73082803_2380784062033561_8675627040755417088_n.jpg

So after half a day fighting with all my power, using half a can of WD-40 the score is Spike 0:1 Jubilat... Tommorow I will bring a torch with me - it can't be stuck if it's liquid, right? :21:

Great project, Spike! That is the nicest Romet I have ever seen. You know, I think I saw an old play called Romet and Jubilat? It was a long time ago.

So after a few hours today, and a lot of heating - I stripped it down to bare frame (broke a few screw in the process). Also as I assumed - the BB bearings came out as loose balls & a lot of rust, so as I guessed earlier - the BB is busted. After that it came for the paint stripper to do its job:
74664488_2382814301830537_4570312568400248832_n.jpg

And after an hour it came out like this:
74680673_2382813945163906_1491935058670387200_n.jpg
74673155_2382814385163862_1297666248988950528_n.jpg
73504918_2382813908497243_156195951826960384_n.jpg

75474086_2382813781830589_3888871798791471104_n.jpg

So it was light blue, the some parts were painted dark blue, than dark brown, and finally light brown. I was thinking on stripping it further, but I kinda like the way it turned out right now. Probably could remove more of the brown paint to get more of the blue tones back to the daylight. What do you guys think?

Also got an idea of the overall concept of the frameset:
73126135_2382813798497254_3234721874151735296_n.jpg
74906696_2382814421830525_2484288566671179776_n.jpg

Cheap 26" MTB fork & 20" wheel. I already ordered a "new" wheel to match the rear one:
73086104_2382829425162358_6903705383341129728_n.jpg

And since the tire looks to be in good condition (I do hope that it will be) I already picked a rear tire:
75491745_2382832311828736_8011092215906435072_n.jpg

IRC MTB Super-8 with the size of 24"x2.125 (57-507) it will be a tough fit, but I think I can manage that.

Great project, Spike! That is the nicest Romet I have ever seen. You know, I think I saw an old play called Romet and Jubilat? It was a long time ago.
Thanks! You should check out my other Romets in the thread Polish Bikes.

There you can find even prettier Romets that I own or had owned.

Also @Grant - You were asking for pictures of bikes saved from the junkyard - this one is the second of my bikes from a junkyard :cool2:

Big problems came today. After I found new spokes for the rear wheel, and a hub I wanted do disassemble the rear wheel that I had for cleaning, and while I was 100% sure that some of the spokes surely would brake, but after removing the tire & tube...

See that rust & dirt pile?
73321839_2384779768300657_7026993188371955712_n.jpg

I don't even wan't to know how long it was outside & without air for the rim to corrode so badly. I hope, that after sanding no holes or weak spots will emerge, since I already ordered a front wheel with a matching rim. I still got the front wheel & it appears to be from a newer model, but it has a different rim.:(

The rim didn't turn out that bad, but I need to buy a set of new spokes & a lot of new parts. Also I must try the idea of using a Nexus 3 speed gripshifter with a Sachs Dreigang hub.

Meh.... you should be good! I did a ‘55 western flyer that actually had rot holes in the front wheel and it was a complete disaster. The lip of the rim that grabs the tire was actually gone and rusted off for about 2 or 3 inches on one side.

I did what you did to clean them up, then used duct tape as a rim liner. I lined the entire rim with 3 firm windings all the way around the wheel.

I put the tube and tire back on and took off on a ride! The wheel worked great for about 6 miles until my pedal stripped off my rusted out crank I tried to rethread! (Ever ridden a bike with one pedal for about 2 miles? My wife still laughs with glee recalling that ride we took!)

I ended up throwing the wheels out due to the fear of failure and used them sparingly on a few other projects. they actually never failed with the duct tape covered rust and rust holes.

After cleaning the rim didn't turn out so bad. Good thing that old Romet steel rims were thicker then modern ones, so ther is still 1-2mm of material on them. Alot of work still left since I need to shorten the headtube on the frame to make it work with the fork, fabricate a front brake mount, the seat with sissy bar & the shifter.

So while I'm waiting for parts (and there is a large list of them still), especially for the spokes, front wheel & 24" tire that I ordered I started working on everything else.

74216711_2397027853742515_7750291201714028544_n.jpg

Shortened the headset tube on the frame for it ot fit my 26" MTB fork. Installed some closed bearing headset & fork.

"New" BB Axle, bearings, crankset & pedals. The crankset & axle came out of a Romet BMX bike.

New seatpost from the Reusable Junk Box.

74474581_2397027960409171_5969036576070565888_n.jpg

So this is how it looks right now. Also Rebuild the rear hub for it, and yes it's my favourite  Sachs Dreigang that I bought from the same kid that I got this bike (even from the same junkyard :21: )

75610906_2399079366870697_2896274950828589056_o.jpg

The spokes came, for a super cheap price (36 for only 4$ shipping included), and no, they're no chinese low budget spokes. They're the Sapim Strong model.

Still waiting for the tire & front wheel. Might as well start working on the sissy bar & seat.

Also I have a question. What height of steering bar is considered an Ape Hanger? I've red somwhere that they should be from 12" to 16" in height.

I already have this one:
c07766dd4321b0d18dadfa4434ee

But it's only 8" in height.

But I was considering buying this one:
wysoka-kierownica-80x39-CHROM-lowrider-cruiser

It's 15" in height.

73413180_2400962640015703_7434183034657570816_o.jpg

This is how it looked when I did the first mock up...

And since today the rear tire & front wheel arrived (and I also forgot the camera :headbang:)

74698896_2400962626682371_833746838275227648_o.jpg

The tires almost match in color. Also the front one is a little bald (it's from 1982 as I believe), but in a solid 4 out of 5 condition.

75210224_2400962653349035_1769496422526222336_o.jpg

Also installed a chain (from leftovers from shortening the Nexus 1spd chains), and also I think that that Zoom stem will stay on the bike, since the original stem is only 21mm in diameter, and is very loose in the headtube.

That tire is the biggest I could find for sale in PL, and it fits just perfectly - wouldn't fit any bigger tire than this one.

Now I must buy new black spokes for the front wheel and change the rim from this one (steel, painted silver) to the one that I took from one of my bikes - a steel chromed one, so the set will be complete.

First thing that I needed very badly on this one was a kickstand.

74526866_2415789685199665_3562501138093703168_o.jpg

This motorcycle style double kickstand found in the Reusable Junk box did the trick.

The next thing I wanted to fabricate was a sissy bar & a seat pan for the banana seat. Why do that? - You ask yourself. As I mentioned in another thread - obtaining a set of sissy bar & banana seat in Poland is not that simple. There is only one shop in Poland that I know of, and even there the prices aren't cheap. So I got an idea... (@OddJob - you may like this).

So since it's already ski season in my shop, and there was a set of skis that was too old to be rented...

76915257_2415789505199683_9069117728073187328_o.jpg

Eyup, you know where this is going...

75231848_2415789798532987_3385716809561800704_o.jpg

So since I right now have a banana seat pan I need a sissy bar.

74916263_2415789518533015_1847180084419493888_o.jpg

Two pieces of 16mm chrome railing from a hardware store.

Now comes the hard part - I phoned at least ten plumbing workshops, two pipe bending workshops, and one wheelchair factory. NONE of those had the necessary machinery to bend 16mm pipes . After two hours of hanging on the phone I remembered what @kingfish254 had made for this year's Build-Off, and that gave me the idea.

Bought this thing from a friend on one of my last postapocalyptic parties this autumn (The convention is called Łyżkon, from a very stupid & flat joke with a game of words). I don't actually know what this thing was used for originally, but I sure know how I will use it.

76203631_2415789385199695_5179431543352852480_o.jpg

The pan had to be narrowed down to look like a seat & not like a piece of a ski.

72146133_2415789821866318_3731448542879809536_o.jpg

I asked my boss "You know those K2 skies right? What's the core in them? She replied - "Oh it's a hard ski, but the core is from wood, If you cut it with a hacksaw you should have no problem with a jigsaw".

Don't know what kind of wood is inside that ski, but if it did THIS to the blade, then my guess is at least Adamantium.

Cleaned the "sissy bar topping" in vinegar, still need to treat it with polishing paste, and make a rear mount for the seat pan (i was thinking - maybe a hub axle?). Also I was thinking on mounting a front brake since all Jubilat bikes had a factory front brake.

If that tubing is strong enough, you could make your sissy bar brace out of that, or run an axle or threaded rod through the tubing with enough length left to run it through the vertical tubes, and nut the ends.

Sweet job on the Skinanner!!! Love the sissy bar topper too.
Hey maybe that could be the build name. Skinanner or maybe Skidaddle.

200px-23skidoo.jpg

Skidoo, that sounds nice  Even better! Since Jubilat bikes in the 80's changed the name to Jubilat 2...
naklejka_60_1.jpg

...so maybe Skid-Two? :21:

Meanwhile - today I figured out a rear mount for the seat pan out of a used rear hub axle, and mounted the lights & reflector.

Those are original rear lights used in some Romet bicycles from the late 70's up to early 80's. Paired for a cool look.

75456697_2419412291504071_3080607126037463040_o.jpg

Also mounted a headlight. I think the lights will be powered by a 8.4V Ni-Mh battery pack that normally use in my Kalashinkov Airsoft Replicas.
Akumulator_ASG_84_1400Stick_15088.jpg

Since the battery pack is thin & long I can just put it inside the frame, and just takie it out by folding the bike.
73213732_2419412411504059_3539821000646459392_o.jpg

The front brake came from my Wagant bicycle, and this is what i figured out for a mount. 4 pieces of side kickstand adapters (used for smaller frame tubing - and since most of the bikes have thicker tubing, I practically don't use it), and a hacked piece of a kickstand.
76894236_2419412448170722_5241930885242028032_o.jpg

Well the mount works - the brake doesn't move in any direction, and after some cleaning, greasing & installing new pads works fine.
