SOUTHERN FLYER - The Renaissance Man..got my votes in..feeling the klunkers this year and Southern Flyer just love the way it all comes together and the way the tires hog up the fenders....very tough deciding though ALL great bikes that i would be glad to own 8)

I voted! Lots of cool bikes, but I was able to narrow it down to 6-8 fairly easy, but then it got difficult. I wish I could have joined the fun this year, but my grandson was staying with us for several weeks, we had my daughter's wedding and a new position at work just proved too much for me. I'll be back next year....Awesome work guys!

Has anyone done the "real" math on this build off? As of right now, there are 766 total votes. Divide that by three and it means only 255 people (plus a small number of single votes) out of 10,000+ members care enough about this to actually vote. :| And I assume 81+26 of those people are participants, so the "traffic" generated by the buildoff at this time is 148 people.
And evidently some of those are "friends" for hire through Facebook. :shock:

Lost of for who join for one reason o another and are not really active. I'd be surprised if anyone was able to generate enough "external" votes for their bikes to make a difference. In fact, I'd be surprised if most builders actually voted for themselves.

I care about stuff here but I just like to look. I haven't been looking at the builds very much at all, just the finished bikes so I know little to nothing about the work that went into any of them. So I dont vote. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Many of the "Members" are dead profiles that someone set up then forgot about. If you click on posts under the member section it puts all members in order of fewest to most posts and you'll notice we have 103 PAGES of people who don't have a single post... NOT ONE! 5150 members who didn't even post an intro! Kinda fitting...5150 is the police code for crazy. :lol:

On page 104 we start on people who only have 1 post, Page 142 it goes to 2 posts, Page 161 it goes to 3, Page 174 it goes to 4 posts, Page 183 it goes to 5 posts, page 190 it goes to 6 posts, skip ahead a little Page 200 it goes to 8 posts, Do the math here 50 members per page, 200 pages, that's 10,000 members with less than 8 posts.

That means out of 13,690 members there are more than 10,000 that have fewer than 8 posts. "Dead profiles"

Is there any way to delete all members that haven't logged in in like 2 years or more? That might help to clean up the site and also bring us to more realistic numbers.

Seriously, though, what kind of company are we in that a bike painted with the SAME PAINT as the Golden Gate Bridge, and a faithful homage to the 80's are in last? It's not because these two bikes aren't cool, I'll say that. If either bike rode by on the sidewalk in real life, I'd stare.

I went back for a closer look at your bike Brentley and I have to say that your gallery photo is what threw me off. I found it hard to keep track of so many builds, so the one photo was important to grab my eye when it came time to choose the bikes that got my attention. This is a cool bike with some great details and workmanship and those things just don't jump out in that photo (which is a shame).

I would have probably lingered longer and clicked for more pics had it been a clear photo set near the Golden Gate itself.

It looks like you put a lot of thought into the bike. I wish that you would've put more into the photos.

I'm not trying to be critical of you, I just believe that this is important for all of the bikes here.

No matter what the pole say's, you have a great bike to enjoy!

My point is that the hype around this build off is over rated. I have said many times before that the direction of this site is going toward the site being secondary to the build off, instead of the build off being secondary to the things that used to make this site great.
The question that needs to be asked is, why do thousands of people join this site, then walk away? What is it that they don't find here that they are looking for? What do they find that they do see that makes them leave?
I am just throwing the thought process out there for the sake of bettering this place. :wink:
I'm sure there are technical and sociological reasons for any site or group to lose numbers or members, but based on Outskirts numbers it appears to me that only about 1% of people who sign up here stay here.

You've got a couple questions here. To answer the first, the B/O adds a little drama to what would otherwise be just a bunch of geeky guys in garages playing with old bicycles. If it's become the center of the forum, it's through natural selection.

The second question is one I've seen on several forums. Is it a site for a few "true believers" or mass media? Lets face it; rat rod bicycles are invisible to the general public, and if they were to become popular among the regular folks, they'd lose the "cool" factor for a lot of us fringe folks. Same for the forum. Let'em visit, and leave if they're bored; the folks that stick around are the ones we want anyway.

You have to remember that just because there's a large number of folks who subscribed to the forum, the number of regular users is significantly smaller.

There are tons of people who are members and view the site from time to time and have never made one post.

That's just the nature of these forums.
