Well, I popped my pre-war cherry yesterday when I picked a very nice Western Flyer for $70. Haven't yet researched the numbers, but believe it to be a '41 Huffman-built unit. It's missing the tank, but everything else appears period and present (chain guard, Troxel saddle, ND coaster, Wards Riverside tires, swirl chainring and skip-tooth chain in good condition). Has the fenders, too, and they aren't mauled. Photos to come once camera weather improves.

I finally got motivated enuff to haul this thing out into the sunlight. Not the worst $70 I've spent. Is that chain guard standard equipment on WF? I've seen that style before, but not so commonly.

Just picked up a chain guard like that myself ,not sure if it's a after market ad on
Or what but I love the deco styling too it
Looks like you got lucky with some jeweled
Grips as well , good looking score for a great price ,I'd say you did really well.

Yeah, I've got the red jewel but the green one is missing. Needs some better pedal blocks, too. Not in any rush, though--I've got other projects to finish before I tackle this one.

Hey RS, I picked up a WF of similar vintage awhile back as well. I haven't pinned down a date either, but it's the first time I've come across the fork style which both bikes share. This pic is as mine arrived for comparison.

Very similar, apart from the guard and chain ring. No evidence mine ever had truss rods, and they hold little appeal to me, regardless.

I read somewhere that the '39 had a straight downtube, the '40 had a welded-on kickstand, and the '41 and beyond had a bolt-on. Mine has a bolt-on, along with a few pre-war hallmarks, so I'm sticking with '41-'42 until proven otherwise.

thats what my 41 looks like and it had a drop stand but they put the buddy seat on it and added a bolt on kickstand.
