@horsefarmer if one frame is lighter, I'd put all the light stuff and the alloy wheels on that one with the skinny tires and make it a speedster. Put the steel stuff on the other and make it a bomber. That way you have more difference between the two. I like having multiple set ups in the fleet. Conversely, you could have two middle of the road all arounders, which isn't bad either.

Took bike for a pretty good ride today. Thought it was odd I could cruise comfortable in top gear. Turned out the 14-16-18-21-24-28 Teeth 6 speed wheel from the Ross bike is lower geared than the 11-13-15-18-21-24-28 Teeth 7 speed original Schwinn wheel. 26 x 1.5 tire is shorter than 26 x 2 tire for a slightly lower overall gear inches. Swapped 1.5 rubber to the original 7 speed wheel. IDK how much heavier the Ross steel wheels are vs the Schwinn alloy wheels will see tomorrow how they work.

Inspection revealed the alloy rims I recycled from a ladies bike shop Schwinn actually had a smaller 11t high gear!

Using Sheldon Brown's gear calculator:
11 - 28t 7 speed alloy wheels original
For 26 X 1.9 / 54-559 / MTB tire with 170 mm cranks
With Shimano 11-13-15-18-21-24-28 7-speed Cassette
46 t chainring

11 t 108 gear inches
13 t 91 gear inches
15 t 79 gear inches
18 t 66 gear inches
21 t 56 gear inches
24 t 49 gear inches
28 t 42 gear inches
So this is as I built it last Winter.

The Ross steel wheel set has a 14 - 28t 6 speed:
For 26 X 1.5 / 38-559 / MTB tire with 170 mm cranks
With SunRace 14-16-18-21-24-28 6-speed Freewheel Cassette
46 t chainring

14 t 82 gear inches
16 t 72 gear inches
18 t 64 gear inches
21 t 59 gear inches
24 t 48 gear inches
28 t 41 gear inches

So after swapping out the wheelset, 6th (top) gear was about equal to 5th gear was with the alloy Schwinn wheels.

Finally, I swapped the 26x1.5 rubber on the higher geared alloy wheels:
For 26 X 1.5 / 38-559 / MTB tire with 170 mm cranks
With Shimano 11-13-15-18-21-24-28 7-speed "ac", "aj" Cassette
46 t chainring

11 t 104 gear inches
13 t 88 gear inches
15 t 76 gear inches
18 t 64 gear inches
21 t 55 gear inches
24 t 48 gear inches
28 41 gear inches

So bike will now be only slightly lower geared than before.

There's a misconception that narrow tires have less resistance .

Cool link!
As a bigger guy, I do like to keep tires well inflated. :)
Both the 26x2 Panaracers and the 26x1.5 Kendas are rated 45 to 65 Psi. Been running them @ 60.
I did get a deal on a pair of Schaube 26x2 cruiser tires. My wife loved them on a Trek she had. May have to try them on here...:39:

Fiddling around with the derailleur adjustments and found out I was introducing drag into the rear derailleur cable.

Turns out Miyata drilled a tiny hole thru one of the rear brake bosses for the rear derailleur cable to pass thru.

Awesome!

The Jamis Diablo I just worked on had that hole. Are those Exage u-brakes?

Got the brown tires mounted on the Ross rims, Only I have Continental 26x2.2 not Schwalbe 26x2.0!

And they don't fit! Maybe if I ditched the fenders and got clearance dimpling the chainstays?

Plenty of room around the front fork, problems in rear - maybe could extend drop outs?

But why bother? It's a pretty heavy frame and not useful to me. Prob strip it down and build it back with big box store parts and flip it. Paint is nice and shiny anyways. I don't understand Ross bike engineering descisions, why build a large strandie/cruiser bike give it 6 speeds, then limit tire size by a skimpy frame design and fenders making it a "middleweight"? :soapbox:
Oh, and whatsup with the super heavy OPC and wierd black plastic pedals?
The ones I have always get blown apart for parts, then flipped.
