I picked this one up a while ago and brought it up from the cellar the other day to start refurbishing it. It will stay stock.

Too bad it's trashed.

Cool graphics in great shape.

Took off the 'mud skirts' which were screwed to the forks. Unfortunate results are two holes in the forks. Oh well, could be worse.

The paint is in great shape under the grime but it's gonna take a lot of polishing.

Using my usual cottered crank dissassembly method proved futile, so I made a tool.

I've always wanted a nice English 3 speed and I have a nice women's Raleigh I paid $10 for in my shed with great chrome. I started polishing the frame today but I ran out of rubbing comound and the auto parts store closed at 2:00.

It's not perfect but nice for a 1961. This Raleigh paint is pretty good stuff.

I bought this girls bike for cheap a while back. I'm going to use the wheels temporarily until I get new spokes for the originals. I'm also going to use the bars, neck and a couple other small parts.

Here's the wheels, I cleaned them up. They're in real nice shape.

I have to buy tires.

Scratch that. I'm still using the bar's but the newer front wheel axle isn't compatible with the forks. So I refurbished the Dynohub. Heres the wheel before.

The chrome on the original wheels was not as nice as the newer wheel so I unlaced the newer wheel and will use that hoop and the original spokes and hub of course. The spokes are 2 different sizes and have cool little R's stamped on the heads. I have to replace one that was missing but it's the same size as the newer wheel and luckily not one of the shorter ones.
This is gonna be one bloody nice wheel.

The long spoke side of the hub has unusual holes. Sorry about the pic.

This bike has so many cool details built into it like the stamped spoke heads, R stamped brake lever mounts and a couple of other things that aren't on the newer parts bike that I beleive is a '70s vintage. Hopefully I will have time to lace it up this week.

Well, I got the wheel laced up and I have to say it was a tricky one. The spokes kept falling out of those odd hub holes until I realized you have to snug them right up as soon as you get them in. It also had 2 different patterns, 1 for the long spokes one for the short. But I got it trued up, (in my new wheel stand, which works great) gave it a spin with a volt meter connected and its producing voltage!    I'm stoked! Tomorrow I'll try the lights.

Nice work on this bike. keep the pics showing.

Here's some pics of the front wheel with the newer hoop laced up. You can see the stamped spoke heads and odd hub holes in these pics. This is a cool old wheel if I say so myself.

I know its not a Rat build but it's a neat old bike. I guess I'll have to do the bck wheel now also. I already stripped the original wheel with the matching dated hub now I have to do the hoop donor wheel. I'll have to use the donors spokes also unfortuneatly. In the last pic is my truck with the Higgins in the back. I rode iton the rail trail yesterday. The looks I got!
Lovin' my new wheel stand.

Awesome work you doing with this bike. I have womens Raleigh Sports and a mens Raleigh Superbe I am going to be working on soon. Both are the same coffee brown so they should look good together. Very cool!

Alright! I've got a LTD of roughly the same vintage, guess I know how much to ask for now. :)
Congrats on the cash!

Mine's got the same goofy self adjusters on the brakes.

I can't believe how much those old Raleighs are fetching over there guys! You can still pick them up for a next to nothing over here. Amazing.

Well I finally got some time to finish her up. First I wasn't going to fill these holes in the forks that someone drilled to install this rain skirt. Then I changed my mind after I got the forks on. Not the smart way.
P1010519.jpg

Cleaned it up.

I stuck some 1/8" welding rod in, marked it and cut it and put it back in.

These are the tubes and cloth rim strips that came with the bike. they were in great shape.

I finally got it together the other night and I rode it today to town hall to get a permit for a shed, a hunting license and pheasant stamps. It was about 7 miles round trip. This is my new favorite bike...for now. Here are some before shots:

Not really a rat, more of a factory hot rod! I'll get some outdoor shots tomorrow. I just finished waxing and polishing her tonite.
