The fork has a pretty cool patina on it, so I am going to clean them a little, then spray them with some semi-gloss clear, followed by a matte clear.
With a little clear, they come out a touch darker, and the matte finish helps minimize the shine.
Really happy with how these turned out.
There was a lot of grease on the fork crown. I cleaned that off, then gave it a spray with semi-gloss clear. I'll let it dry a bit, then hit it with the matte clear.
Decided to clear coat the struts - semigloss followed by matte. It really makes the rusty patina pop.
I never learn... I had my rim pretty much good to go, then decided to spray them with a top coat of Rustoleum gloss clear, and the .... paint orange peeled. It's done this before to me - about 50% of the time I suppose. Needless to say, I had to strip, sand and reprime these. Will paint when I get a chance. Pain in the butt...
The springer fork is original, and takes a smaller than standard axle. I have plenty of front wheels, but none that have the right axle diameter, so I had to pull apart a rusty Schwinn S6 wheel I had lying around to scavenge the hub. It's Schwinn, but made in France. (very fancy, no?)
It cleaned up nicely, but the ball bearings are shot. This is a loose bearing hub, so basically all the bearings will fly all over the floor of you aren't careful opening it.
Packed with Phil Wood grease, but it still doesn't roll as smooth as I was hoping - I'll probably have to replace those at some point. For now, though, it's ready to be laced to the front wheel.
