Wasnt going to put a second build in this fall, but at Thanksgiving, my dad dropped by a couple bikes outta the Barn he was going to toss into the scrap pile.

One of them was this 87 Spalding BMX SPX-1000. I think it was from Wards or Sears. If i remember right they were a cromo made by Team Murray. Hung in the barn for many years. (Moth/beetle filled tubes)

I have a frame build over on the MBBO side that i have yet to finish, but this BMX build should be quick. MBBO will finish in the last few weeks of the year when i have a lot of time to think.

For this build, will Tear it down, Clean it up, maybe touch it up in a few places, assess for any major repairs, re-tire and seat it, and call it done. At least that is my plan. Will aee if it can be at least riding by the weekend.

I started cleaning last night. Grips were a mess, came off wit ease, so started there.

Moved to stem. Waa froze in place, a few good whacks with a brass punch and a hammer on the stem bolt and out it came. Seat post came out but was ruuusty on the underside. Elbow greaa on the acrubber for the painted, sos pads for the shiny

Bars were dirty, and rusty. Took care of the dirt. One ding.

Star brakes and levers, chipped up but functional.

Wheels, fork and frame for later.

Frame cleaned up pretty decent

Lots of rock chips. Its a rocker.....

Stays amd forks were full of moth/beatle dirt

Fork is straight.

but brake dented. Seems there was Lots of hard braking in the past.

Wheels cleaned up. Most of the rust came off the chrome replacement that was on it. Original white wheel has a lot less rust stains on the white.

Jc penny was the dept store, i suspect

I like it as well. I was tginking about letting it loose after the cleanup, nownot so much. Will be a cool runner bike for some of the big group rides here in Vegas.

Assembled again. Tried taking it for a ride. Geared well 46x16. The aecond i put heavy torque to that old chain, i broke the chain and my knee.

One thing i didnt see in the photo yesterday is the bent seat tube.

Look in previous post. Now somewhat straightened, got about 2 additional inces of the seatpost into the bike. More work todo.

Just about done. Threw my brooks MTB seat on it until a new seat arrives.

New tires and chain. Fast little bike. Will be a fun runner.

This bike is a bit heavier than my chromo mag predator but fits me a lot better. Way hotter for me cuz it doesnt bang handlebars on my knees...

Was cold tonight. Hot ride but by the time we got back it was pretty cold.

This new seat is pretty cool. Turned a little black ( in the pics ) from my black jeans but that wiped off when we got back...

Went out for a pic or two at the park up the street, and it started the rain. Over 240 days since rain on this end of town...

My friend said it looks like it might rain as he hopped on his 40 columbia... He was right.

Put 30 milea on this ol bike yesterday, solid runner. Wanna get it to the BMX park but it was covid closed. Will find a new place to get some final pics at soon.
