I am a long time admirer of RRB, but have never posted much. I flip bikes as a hobby and have been saving up various parts and frames for rat build ideas that I have. It's finally time for me to build one, so here goes nothing.

I went over to my bicycle stockpile at my dad's and pulled out various bikes and parts to brainstorm.

I decided to start with a grungy 1978 Schwinn Typhoon. I will share my mock ups later, but I am playing off of an idea of incorporating a skateboard into the seat.

Re: SHRED SLED - Savannah Flipper's First Rat Build

cool idea. I can't wait to see where this build goes.

Re: SHRED SLED - Savannah Flipper's First Rat Build

I consider this Typhoon my first true rat build, but I did flip a Madwagon cruiser last year after I added some rat touches to it (Paid $5 for the bike and sold it for $160).

Re: SHRED SLED - Algae frame - Possible parts

I stripped all of the parts off of the frame and had to give it a ligtht bleach cleaning because it had alayer of algae on it from our humid summers here in Savannah.

Here is my algae bike

It cleaned up okay. I think I am going to keep the original paint, but am still not sure. It should clean and polish up a little better, but it would definitely be rat if I didn't paint it. Opinions?

Below are some of the parts that I have salvaged from my stockpile.

Re: SHRED SLED - 7/1 Early mockups

Here are some shots of the de-algaed frame mocked up with a rack from a 70s Raleigh ladies 3 speed, the skateboard, the Skyrider crank and chainguard, and a tank from ebay. That's enough for now. Time to go have beer.

Re: BEER RUN - name change (formerly SHREAD SLED)

I love the used and abused look of the the scratched up board art. I might just clear coat it.

I am thinking about drilling and notching the skateboard so that it is mounted under the rack with the rack legs going through it.

There are a few ideas I have around how to work the seat. Nothing decided on that until I pull out the different seats I have.

Re: BEER RUN - Rolling Chassis with beer holder

Picked some springer forks from a friends broken Trek cruiser.
Mounted some trick bike handlebars with the bottom bar out in front of the bike.
Mounted another handlebar stem to the bottom bar. This or another stem will end up being the mount for my light.

It turns out this handlebar springer combo makes the perfect beer coozie holder. GO RAMBLIN WRECK!

I had a yard sale Huffy 24" cruiser sitting around, so I snagged the short wheels from it. I like the low slung look this will give it. I just won't be able to lean into any curves while pedalling.

I am digging the Skyrider chainguard. I think I might just clear coat it. I will definitely be painting the star chain ring though.

Next I need to pull out my seats and see what fits well with my idea of incorporatind it into the board. I am thinking that the seatpost will attach to the board like a banana seat and then mount the seat onto the board. Maybe even mount just the padding and vinyl from the seat to the board. We'll see what shakes out.

Here is the rolling chassis with and without the skateboard. I forgot to mock up the tank into this set of photos.

Re: BEER RUN - Savannah Flipper's First Rat Build

I am still not sure with the original paint on this one. I am leaning towards a repaint. Please give me our feedback. The restorer in me wants to keep the old paint, but I don't know.

b double e double r u n beerrun! all we need is a 10 and a 5 and a car and a key and a sober driver.... sorry, i cant read your post without thinking of that song. a cool build, i like it.

Re: BEER RUN - Savannah Flipper's First Rat Build

I think the original paint looks great; that's my vote.

Re: BEER RUN - Savannah Flipper's First Rat Build

I bet if you cleaned that paint really good and waxed it you would be surprised at what it would look like. :D

You are probably right. I have success doing that in the past. Very light polishing compound helps, but you have to be careful not to rub too much out.

LOL, I had never heard that song before, but it is now stuck in my head too.

As part of my Re-Cycle Bikes for Beer program, the other day I paid $15 for an old Royce Union (Monkey Ward) road bike. I stripped of all of it's parts and just sold the frame for $60. Guess I need to take the profits and make a B double E double R U N.

Re: BEER RUN - Rolling Chassis with real beer

The fake beer (MGD64) that was in the earlier photo was really bugging me, so here is a photo with a Left Hand Milk Stout. I also popped the tank in.

I went ahead and mocked up a few seats as well as some silver 24" fenders. The fenders look fine, but not ratty enough. These are a couple of the seats I am thinking of.

cool build ,really like the skate board idea :!: very cool ,you almost don't even need a seat , you could also take a whole saw and cut some places in the board for more beer to ride ... just a thought :) and of your two handle bar choices ,I thought the other set was really cool 8) , but anyway very cool build great ideaa :!: :!:I Like it tin man

My original think was to not have a seat, but to sit right on the board, but I am leaning towards having a seat now.
Cool idea about the beer holes, but the metal rack would be in the way.
You know, I never actually tested the other bars. I just like the way the current bars give me a cool way to use another bar stem as a mount for a light.
I have a few other beer theme ideas to try once I get this ridable.

Re: BEER RUN - Seat and first ride

Decided to try out my big friggin springer seat on the bike after I got the chain and rack mounted. Then I wedged the skateboard between the seat and the rack and took it for its first ride.

Re: BEER RUN - Handlebar decisons

I really liked the isdea of using the lower bar to mount a stem for a headlight, but after riding it and looking closer, I just think the piece of the handlebar hanging out front actually hides the springer too much. Here are a couple of other choices I mocked up. You can see the original in the early posts. Let me know what you think?

Option 1

Re: BEER RUN - Seat or no seat?

I am still seriously considering just using the skateboard as the seat. It couldn't be any harder than the old school flat polo banana seats the early muscle bikes had. Maybe even chop another skateboard off and have it as the sissy bar back rest?
