I stopped by an antique mall on my home from the landfill Saturday. Several of the vendors were set up outside. This one caught my eye...

So I bought it! 1954...I'm pretty sure it has aftermarket fenders. I even think I'll leave the basket on for now...

Nice bike. Fenders do look aftermarket. I don't think the seat is original for a 1954 as the two tone seats came in 57 or 58 and the "S" two tones in 1959.

Thanks!!

OG fenders arte stainless steel into the early 60s, they're also wider than the later ones. Stock seat on a 54 would be an old style Mesinger. Love the bike!

I found a pic of another '54 on-line and it had painted fenders...I think Schwinn offered options for fender choice. Thanks!

I put new tires/wheels on and got the front fender to fit better...I need to repair the basket...

http://www.trfindley.com/flschwinn_1951_1960/1955_06.html 1955 Looks to be the first year for the American and other middle weight bikes Corvette Tiger and Flying Star. http://www.trfindley.com/flschwinn_1951_1960/1955.html I couldnt find any info on a American for 1954 in the Schwinn catalogs
Thanks Pal! It might be a 1956...Here's the thing: The serial # is N57903...My serial # charts say: N57413-N71500=11/01 1954 However...In 1956, there is a serial # range of: N52574-N58611=10/3 to 10/5 1956...? :? And I don't show that "N" was used at all in 1955...So your guess is as good as mine! :D

yup that bracket is for a shifter cable, i havent seen other chainguards in that style with one though, but i know the style after that one had similar clips on the girls bikes only for the shifter cables
