Im going to start my next build this week. Its another Beast. Ya, I know the new Dolomite is coming out, but I have this one already.

Heres the plan:

ScreenShot2014-03-02at82443PM_zps168fe06c.png

Im going to shorten the chain stays as much as possible. Hopefully they will end up about 15 1/2 inches long. 70 degree seat tube, 67 ish degree head tube. Geometry will be approaching DH bike status, this may or may not work, but theres only one way to find out.

Drivetrain will be 2x9 using a lot of parts from my Intense. Brakes will be 203mm Hayes hydraulic discs front and rear. Tires will be Devist8rs, front hub will be a DMR revolver and rear hub will be a widened Deore. Front fork will be a Salsa Enabler.

Paint will be white Plastidip.

Heres the kicker - I'm shooting for 33lbs. Not sure if thats possible, but its a goal.

Heres the only pics I have so far. Basic stick 48.8lb blue Beast:

I got the bike torn down tonight. Here are some weights of various parts:

Chain guard 183.3 g
Kick stand 295.6 g
Wheel reflectors 67 g
Handlebars 572.4
Stem 482.3
Seatpost 457.3
Seat 342.6
Seatpost clamp 33.4
Pedals 381.2
Chain 343.2
Cranks 1140.1
Headset 163.5
Bottom bracket 427.2
Fork 1341.4
Frame 9lbs (bathroom scale; weighed it 4 times, once 8.8, once 9.2, twice 9.0)

I haven't had a chance to weigh the wheels yet, but when I do, I will post the weights.

And the obligatory update pic:

you should post the numbers at weight weenies dot starbike dot com
that's a site for tracking the lightest racing parts!

The stock seat post clamp weighed 45 grams on my Litespeed!

Here is the rest of the weights:

Rim strip 87.7
Front spokes with nipples 265
Rear spokes with nipples 263.8
Front hub. 294.1
Rear hub w gear and brake strap 1194.6
Rim 1190
Inner tube 727
Tire 6.4 lbs (bathroom scale)

Only part I didn't get was the grips.

OH, and the bottom bracket shell is 110mm and the spindle is 175mm long

I got one of the rims just about finished tonight. It still needs a bit of filing. I was able to take almost 400 grams off of it, and it looks AWESOME!

If my math is right, I will save 8 pounds just with tubes, tires, and drilling the rims. And thats using heavy wire bead Devist8r tires.

looks kind of like a Specialized fatboy rim:

Small Update:

I also got my rear wheel mostly done. I widened a Deore hub, and used the rim I just drilled. Spokes are stock, rim strip is Batman Duct tape, backed by regular Duct tape. Tire is a Devist8r, and tube is just a generic 200gram tube.

Right now the rear wheel is 2,446.1 grams lighter than the stock. That is about 5.4 pounds! It still needs a brake rotor and cassette though.

Update from yesterday:

I had a little help in the garage so I was able to get some work done:

Once my helper went to bed, I started to dig into the frame.

I started by making a pie shaped cut thru the top tube and about 90% thru the down tube:

I used a piece of rope to pull the gap shut while I measured the angles:

Here it is welded up:

eb577306b072841e327cafda7fc56d9d_zps555cf198.jpg

And a bit of primer:

At this point, with the bottom bracket drop at 2 1/4 inches, the seat tube is 72 degrees and the head tube is 66 degrees. This bike should be a blast to ride!

wait what.
I need to confirm this...
You shaved 5 lbs off the rear rim alone just by doing those cuts?
