I got the front wheel done tonight. I got a DMR Revolver hub, and did the triangle holes like the rear rim. The front rim ended up at 775.3 grams. That's over 414 grams lighter than stock! I was able to use the stock spokes, but had to trim about 3mm from each one.
Here are some pics:

I also ordered a set of Vee Rubber Vee8 tires. They should save me about 2-1/2 pounds over the Devist8rs.

Im kinda curious how these wheels hold up after putting holes in them, have you ridden them yet? and on any drops or rough stuff?

The Dolomite's stock wheels held up great to stair drops, and the beasts are the same, so figured I'd ask.

I'm debating pulling the trigger on those Vee tires also. The price seems right, but I wanted to wear these out first.

I haven't ridden these, but I have ridden the ones on my first beast. They have 1-1/2 inch holes. They have held up great! I've done drops, fast downhill, up steps, down steps, small jumps, no issues at all. And I'm not a small guy, 6'2" 220bs, probably 235 with gear.

I went a little crazy on my cassette tonight. Lost 62.5 grams, mostly from the 2 big cogs....

This is getting to be one of my favorite builds! The attention to detail is unreal.

Thanks! Im not sure if its attention to detail, or me just trying to get the weight down to a minimum, but its a fun build, and hopefully will be a fun ride!

I'm a bit of a weight weenie myself, so this build is right up my alley.

Time to start the interesting part of this build. The rear triangle!
I have never liked the rear dropouts, they are big and heavy. I took a page from another build and changed them.

Stock dropouts are 322.9 grams. Now the dropouts have a derailer hanger and weigh 125.7 grams. That's a 197.2 gram saving; almost a half pound! (.43 lbs)

I got a ton done tonight.

First off here are the cranks I will use until I can find something lighter. The chainring is a Salsa and is about 40g.

I went ahead and cut off the rear triangle:

I decided I wanted to use the seat stays as chain stays. No real reason for doing this, but I thought it would give it a better look. I think it did. After a lot of measuring, checking level and square, both with the tire on and off, I was finally able to tack on the new chainstays:

I wanted the chainstays to be as short as possible. Here you can see that the tire is about 1/2 inch from the seat tube. This bike won't see show, just mostly dry hardpack, so extra clearance for 5" tires wasn't a concern:

Next step was to get the seat tubes on, Here is a pic of how the tubes ended up on the dropouts:

And finally a side shot of the new rear end. It doesn't look much like a Beast anymore:

The next step is to weld it solid, then do the cable bosses, and disc mount, then paint. Hopefully be then my new rear tires will be here and I can start putting it together!

maybe shave the seat tube a bit instead of lengthening the chainstays.
