This will be my first time participating in a buildoff, actually it will be my first time documenting a build at all. So here goes. The look I'm going for is straight off an old fence line, think rusty old beer cans, signs, bullet holes and barbed wire. The serial number shows the Straightbar is a 5I, I picked it up the this summer in a package deal with a 30's Colson.
Here's what I'm starting with....yes the chainstay is bent, I'll be attempting to take care of that soon.

The frame has almost zero paint left and is completely crusty although I can see some red on the headtube.

This is the first Staightbar I have ever worked on, or owned, I'm pumped! Cantilever frames are way more prevalent around here, you can't hardly through a rock in the air without hitting one.
I have a donor 53 straightbar with a busted frame with a nice springer I will be stealing parts from.

The Springer fork has been house painted, but some goof off should take care of it. I need to get the fork squared away so I can settle on wheels.

Before I get to the fork, I need to address this bent chainstay. So I had a big supper...but still wasnt feeling heavy enough so 24 oz later I was ready.

Just about perfect. Still a tiny dent on the outside but I'm happy, ecstatic really! First time staightening a frame and success!

Don't mind that insanly bent and siezed kickstand, it will removed.

I really wanted to get the fork on tonight and the straightening went so well I decided to press in the headset. But unfortunately I got cocky and put them in reverse of what they should be [emoji30]

Now it's too late, actually more like to loud to beat them out to reinstall.....Apparently after two beers I fall apart completely.

No actual work gets done once the beer begins. I've seen a lot of things needing redone after having beer. If I have any ideas, I write them down to see if they have merit the next day. Usually not.

Ok I fixed the headset and installed the fork. I'm starting to get a feel for what this rust bucket is going to be. I want take it for a drive.

I'll be watching this one! And hey, that springer is just the right type, so that if you flip the steer tube around backwards, it leans the whole thing forward, giving it a meaner stance.

So the flipped fork was going to be configuration 2, but the bracket won't lay flat. What am I doing wrong? I like the look but what gives?

Those Schwinn springers never seem to line up correctly for me. I just tighten up the top nut to flatten it out. *shrugs*
I was afraid you were going to say that. It lined up perfect in the factory set up. I need to put on the wheels and see which setup I like before I work up the nerve to start cranking on my Springer.

You have a couple choices... a spacer under the bottom race, looks like about a half inch...or bend the top bracket to a sharper angle, probably the easiest solution. I've done both before and either one will work.

Carl.

Bending the bracket would look the cleanest I think. I hate doing things I can't undo to original parts but I think I just need to get over it.

I put mine in a vise and tapped on it. Clamp the big ring that goes around the tube so it doesn't get bent there. Then a small ball peen hammer will bend it to a sharper angle, little at a time, it's easy to tap tap and fit, tap tap and fit.... heat probably wouldn't hurt but I didn't need any. BUT both of mine were reproductions not vintage...

If I wanted to get reproduction bracket, will any style work? I see some that list they are for 60's model crates and the like. I much perfer the idea of bending non OE pieces.

th

seems like the only thing to be concerned with would be the tube diameter... if the repo bracket is too small you'll have to ream it out. But note that you could buy a whole fork for what some of those clowns want on eBay just for parts from one....

Carl.
