I was hoping to get a few more pictures, but ran out of time. I had a blast working on this bike, and I admire all the passion and creativity on this site. Very cool. The idea behind this build was to create a modern version of the famous Schwinn Black Phantom. I used a Centennial Phantom frame...

    Phantom Menace

I took the frame and fork to a bike shop that specializes in mountain bikes, and they dug through the parts bin to find sealed bearings for it. I had to shorten the tube about an inch. Usually the gooseneck clamps to the top of the head tube. But since I used the clip-on style bars, I just put a...

They're called "Clubman" bars. You usually find them on cafe bikes from the 60's and early 70's. When they're flipped over the other way, they act like "Clip-ons".

Here's one I built 15 years ago. It's got a Nexus 7 speed disc brake in the back and an Indian minibike fork with a drum break up front. The thing weighs about 70 pounds, but it's brilliant going downhill.

Yeah, I know it's not a traditional "Rat" since it's not old and crusty. But it's following the rat tradition of mixing parts and creating something new and different. My aim is to create something that the Black Phantom would have evolved into if Schwinn had kept producing them. The Z06...

Got a few more pieces put together. It's starting to come to life. I'm anxious to get that fork mounted next.

Yeah, they're motocycle clip ons. I pushed the fork legs up in the triple tree which lowers the bike a couple inches in the front. Those forks are really long. The clip-ons slid right over the top of the fork legs and that was it.

I got wheels laced up and the tires mounted. I'm using black 24" rims with black spokes and red anodized nipples. The tires are 24X3 Felt. The front fork is a Foes downhill mountain bike setup. The rear hub is a Nexus 3 speed with a coaster brake. I'm hoping o get the 3-piece crank installed...

I'm starting with a centennial Black Phantom frame that I found on ebay. I'm going with a totally modern interpretation of the 50's icon. Ducati meets Schwinn. For the life of me I can't figure out how to attach a picture though. I must be missing something really simple.

El Segundo, affectionately referred to as Smell Segundo. It's a small beach town in LA conveniently located near the city's sewage treatment plant.

Thanks dude. I think I got it. This is a 1954 Schwinn. I started with an old frame that was left for dead. I grafted a motorcycle (1970's Indian minibike) fork to the frame and had a 26 inch rim laced to the drum brake hub. It's got a Shimano 7 speed hub with a dic brake in the back. I was...

Thanks. Computers perplex my caveman mentality. Here's another feeble attempt:
