Have others been dog bit while riding or had close calls?

There are a few big ones that roam my 'hood from time to time. They can and will chase, and not in a playful "I want to play fetch" sort of way but rather in a "let me eat your face" sort of way. I really am afraid to ride because of this, and I absolutely hate the idea of having to get violent...

    Broken Chain Club

All that steel must have made the downhill run exciting. Need to try that on my Murray sometime!

    Broken Chain Club

I can only imagine that lovely feeling of squeezing the lever only to find that the rather expensive disk brake is about to die. I used to run a front brake but I'm in a bad spot money wise so I can't afford a better fork and brake system than the old worn out (and dangerous) one I have.

    Broken Chain Club

Man that must feel terrible on a group ride. Luckily never blown a tire, yet.

    Broken Chain Club

Well, I was out on a nice ride through the 'hood, pedaling up a somewhat steep hill when my chain decided to misbehave on me. Slipped off first, got it back on and tried to limp home, less than 50 feet later I'm taking the walk of shame and had to leave the remains of a Chinese chain behind. Who...

    Rusty/Patina Bicycle Gallery

It'll be fine for now, especially since the spraybomb is almost 20 years old. Looks ratty enough that it might as well be the original finish.

    Rusty/Patina Bicycle Gallery

The actual original finish is hidden by a very old spraybomb job which is slowly aging, but still has a bit of surface rust.

The terrible creations that we call "hills"

I took my chances and swapped a monster 46 tooth for a little 36 tooth and it made a huge difference. Long crank arms, combined with the better gearing made this ride a good one. I actually broke more sweat from being able to ride longer up and down the 'hood.

The terrible creations that we call "hills"

I have a question regarding these abominations known as hills. Should I use a smaller chainwheel up front to fight the steep hills of the neighborhood? I currently run a 46 tooth up front and it's great for casual riding, but really not that great when fighting a literally uphill battle. I have...

    Wild Child ('68 Murray)

Just a quick update folks, it looks like this old frame will live to ride again. Thanks to preventative measures this old beast will be back on the road again.

    Wild Child ('68 Murray)

Those welds are near the seat tube, where the two curved tubes meet the seat tube and top tube. There is also a fender mount that doubles as a stabilizer on the rear, holding the two curved tubes together behind the seat, and they are iffy-lookin on my frame. I wasn't sure about mine but I got...

    Wild Child ('68 Murray)

The wheels are 26 inch, the tires 26x1.75 Innovas. This frame is a loss now, and it's future has yet to be determined. I can't fix it for lack of funds/tools, and I can't sell it because no one wants a busted frame.

    Wild Child ('68 Murray)

I noticed that some welds looked pretty close to failing and decided to take a closer look while it was torn down. Sadly, I don't think the welds will hold much longer, and the rear triangle is borked from a few Duke boys style jumps.

    Wild Child ('68 Murray)

Due to concerns about the integrity of the frame, Wild Child will be torn down indefinitely. In the mean time, his parts will be put on the Tubatron SXT frame so that they still get use.

    T-one's Bikes

I love 'em, especially the Apache, killer build on that. Tres bien!

    Wild Child ('68 Murray)

I've had this old Murray sittin around, just now got it up and rideable. No fenders, ages-old el cheapo paint job, some old bars were my motivation to get her up and built. I have a different stem and bars on it now, and the original nasty chainguard has been mounted (sort of!)

What is the best new bike you've ever bought New?

Re: What is the best new bike you've ever bought? My 68 Murray definitely isn't new, and I didn't buy it it was free, but when it's all put together and ridable it is the best of my 2 rides.

    What size should I use?

That 1.75 looks just right, so maybe I'll try that. Thanks for the info.

    What size should I use?

I have a 1968 Murray cruiser frame being fixed up and I was doing fine until it came to the fitting of the rear wheel. The tire (26x2.125) rubs the frame when it spins, and I would like to know what size I might try to relieve the issue. I'm thinking 2 or 3 sizes down should work, but not sure...
