    Upgrades to 65 Schwinn Coppertone

They aren't working, but they are also sealed bearings. I wanted to try to upgrade the steering a little, especially with the springer addition and the fork sizes. I have the originals but no way to measure them, and they are old as heck and missing ball bearings and have dried grease and...

    Upgrades to 65 Schwinn Coppertone

Thanks, I worked from the tire up and yes with little tightening tweaks here and there I have it to where I am satisfied. The last thing is the steering bearings, I just cannot find any info on what size I need, does anyone know where I can find that info?

    Upgrades to 65 Schwinn Coppertone

Just so I am reading you straight, the alignment seems to start from the axle up, I started tightening from the spring housing down, I bet that is the problem, thank you a ton for that. And for the springer, I didn't shorten it up, I confirmed what was already said by others here, it would have...

    Upgrades to 65 Schwinn Coppertone

So forgive the bad staging, but this thing is ride ready, and then just going to eventually change the shift situation around, and maybe a few other minor things. One question for the group, I swapped out the steering bearings from the open ball type to a closed bearing, but I can't find the...

    Upgrades to 65 Schwinn Coppertone

Yeah I will use JPEG next time, forgot which format works on this site. I can maybe trade the forks back, but it is probably not worth it, the fact that the forks are too long is real problematic quality control-wise, because they are supposed to be for 26s. I will have to look again to see if...

    Upgrades to 65 Schwinn Coppertone

So attaching photos of what I have finally done, re-routed the shifter onto the seat stem, temporary until I get the stick shifter done and a shorter cable. Swapped out seat, added grips. Knurling on handlebars sucks so I will drill in a self-tapping screw from both sides to add support. And...

    Upgrades to 65 Schwinn Coppertone

Ha ha nice avatar/handle, love the Misfits! Yeah the handlebars are awesome, but they are not wide enough for the clamp, so I have to put some beer can shims in there, a little extra work but no big deal. That is why I'm trying to shorten the shifter to a pull shifter on the frame, the cable...

    Upgrades to 65 Schwinn Coppertone

Thanks yeah will definitely check the shifters out, and the crank saw is just to have something extra to do, it's not a high performance bike, just needs to get up the boardwalk ramps, that will probably be the last thing I address. And yes that paint stays!

    Upgrades to 65 Schwinn Coppertone

This build is going to take forever, apologies on that but my time is generally obligated elsewhere. But this is the initial start, swapped out the bars. I think I am going to keep this very basic. New grips, new chain, obviously new tube for the flat rear tire, new seat. Surboard/skateboard...

    Upgrades to 65 Schwinn Coppertone

I'll probably leave the threaded stem then, it's not like it's a high performance bike, I would like to fiddle with the gearing though to give the 3 speed a little more kick. And will definitely post pics.

    Upgrades to 65 Schwinn Coppertone

So I need to do the sacreligious and swap out a bunch of original parts on a 65 Coppertone. It currently has a Shimano Nexus 3 speed hub to give it a little extra go, but everything else is pretty rickety at this point, so I am going to modernize. Any advice appreciated, I am definitely...

    Stingray to BMX Conversion

Very nice! Is that a Coppertone Junior frame? And love the mags and the black fender, that's a great touch. Throwing this in the inspiration file to show him.

    Stingray to BMX Conversion

Thanks to great advice from the members here, the build is underway. This is just a mock-up using parts from a junk bike I found in the trash and my daughters old stingray frame. Plans are to definitely spray the frame and maybe handlebars and forks, depending on color-scheme and style my son...

Replace loose bearings with sealed/caged bearings on GT hub

Thanks, I will look into that, may just be some trial and error. And I think caged just have the ring holding the bearings, the sealed ones are more like skateboard bearings.

    Rebuild advice - Schwinn Stingray

Sick, thanks. My son and I are going to do the rebuild together, we are using the first bike as inspiration. I have a few bikes I can cannibalize those parts from. Greatly appreciated.

    Rebuild advice - Schwinn Stingray

Just looking for some ideas here. I have a beat up Stingray that's been sitting around forever. It gets ridden, but the springer front end is bent (and the handling is wobbly), and it obviously needs a bit of rust removal, etc. I want to swap the front end for either a traditional set of...

Replace loose bearings with sealed/caged bearings on GT hub

Hello, I have not posted in forever on the site, good to be back. I have a GT hub that was not turning the wheel. Opened it up, it's loose bearings, a bunch of which are just crushed. Anyhow, I'd prefer to replace it with a set of sealed bearings, or caged bearings. Any ideas on how to do...

    Stingray Question

Ha ha, I took it as a question, didn't get around to snapping one yet. If it is a reflector mount, I definitely don't need it. I'll just pop it off. Thanks for the help.

    Stingray Question

    I'll take one, and thanks.
