I saved this 58 Schwinn from the crusher or should I say whats left of it.
So if you guys dont mind a newbie in this build off, I like to give it a go .
Here it is clamped in the jaws of the rat stand in as found condition and
ready for this weeks project..final teardown and clean up/ inspection.
It has the usual suface rust and the rack's a little bent ,the fender aint
to bad for a rat so I'll try and roll out the dents. The frame # L851223
best I can tell its late 58. now see what I can pull out of the pile of parts
to build it.

found a little quality time this morning with the bike, I had this front end
from a different project (not right for that one) might work for this one
though it is a little cheesy. Shown here in 20 - 20 just to see what it looked like but I am thinking 24 - 20 ...it does have a good attitude and
stands up well with the oe kickstand. I straightend the rack, removed
the forward brace and lowered it, some mods are needed for the front
mounting but I really hate to cut this part...hard to find in this shape so
maybe just fab a bracket, the bars from an old freestyle bmx and a borowed seat from one of my other bikes just to make it look whole.
Part of the parts pile in the background.

Looks good. Hey email me at [email protected] about the parts you would be willing to sell or trade off that blue schwinn tandem you have in 'pile-o-bikes' back there. Thanks

lookin good..I love the Color..a lot!
And the Drive line is SPOTLESS>> nice clean up on the Chainrings and De-railer!!!

when I posted up my little Rat Rod Bikes
Video I showed your doner bike..not the
Schwinn Frame..sorry for that my friend..

it's lookin great..and the Sunshine in the
pictures looks like a Warm Welcome!

peace,
Kev.

Thanks Kev...this build off is fun stuff...I've had some parts laying around
for a while just waiting for the right project. Its amazing what some 4/0
steelwool and mothers polish can do !

I put a few parts on and took it out for a ride...no brakes just bare bones
felt nice, rode true and solid...decided against the long fork and 20" wheels. Went with a standard length fork instead with 26" front and rear.
I live in an area where every road is a hill so its 18 speeds once I get a shifter
mounted and I need to figure out some brakes as I just dont have anything that fits.
here it is semi whole

I've had this nos union headlight for a long time
100_3400.jpg

yep thats an s6 rim with a 26x1 1/4 tire ...an oring on a rim up front
and in back an electra hotster 26x2.125 but it sure seams fat for its size
alwars liked red striped tires..british sports car days

Niiiiice bike

i LOVE the bike, 10 speeds are fun, Maybe a shifter like off 1 of the old crates? Just a suggestion.

take 1 old seat post, a piece of bar stock, a chrome cap...cut weld grind and you get this.
what is this ? you ask

100_3410.jpg

its a shifter mount
100_3412.jpg

more free stuff from the pile...rickster have you priced a krate shifter lately ?

schwinn

No i just thaught it would look sweet, Nice bike man i love it!!

Thanks Kev, the boot was definately a quick job..hand sewn in about 15 minutes.
The weather is so nice today , I coundn't resist taking it out for a ride to test the shifting????that when it got a little scary..did I mention all the roads around here
are hills, I went uphill first to put a load on the drivetrain but then I had to come back down.
Nope could not slow up enough to make the turn toward home so on down the hill,
all of a sudden the front end starts to wobble, I look down and see the tire has a big bulge...I was loosing the bead on one side. I got it stopped in front of the church at the bottom of the hill so I stopped said a prayer and snapped this pic.
no more rides till it has brakes

Haha yeah that is scary, 1 time i was riding my haro down a big hill, (just put new tires on) lol the tire like came off the rim i blew the tube and i did a front flip and smacked my head on the pavement, U lucked out. HAHA I love the bike man its lookin bad ...

WOW that sounds scary. Glad you made it out of it ok. I just wanted to say your pic is AWESOME with the background and all. Thats prolly one of my favorite pics now on this site. I live in flat old Indiana and love the mountains. Nice bike and pic. Troy
