Rene Herse came out with this 5x crankset.

In the mid 90s, a company called Mountain Tamers made a kit to convert a normal MTB crankset to a 5x.

Legs are a bit tired and used. My 5x would be 24t, 26t, 28t, 30t, and 32t driving a 10 speed cassette, 11-34. I guess I'm now looking for the widest range front derailleur or maybe this thing is shifted by hand?

Another, more extreme example of a 5x.

After focusing in on the front derailleur it looks like it might have been enhanced with more cage in order to accommodate the height differential from small to large sprocket. I can see that I need to put one of these five speed front ends on my wish list. I could decrease the size of the rear cogset to 5 cogs thus getting 25 speeds and then spend copious amounts of time figuring out which combinations work best. This will probably replace 1X.
