Saw this on Craigslist and couldn't resist. I wasn't sure from the pic if it was a 24" bike with a 20" wheel stuck on the front or a 20 with a 16, but I figured I'd check it out either way.

Turned out to be a 24, which I was excited about for a couple reasons: first of all, I think Mantas are cool but I can't afford to play at that level, and second, I just happened to have a 24" front wheel around and nothing to do with it.

The front wheel is off a Ross, and the front fender is missing, but it appears that everything else is original right down to the grips that say Sears in the ends.

Tested it up and down the driveway and it seems like it'd be a good rider. Gonna clean it up the best I can and see how much fun I can have without actually spending any money on it...

For reference, I found this pic online... seems to be the same bike except the way the guard is painted. Different year, maybe?

The 1966 Sears catalog shows a 20-inch bike that seems identical to this in every way except wheel size. Several late '60s Sears catalogs show this bike with 24" wheels in magenta and with a luggage rack hanging off the sissy. Still hunting online for info...

Nice find. Awesome seat,good luck...Stevil

Very cool bikes! I have owned 2 in the past and are a lot cheaper than the comparable Manta Rays!

My Dad bought me a Sears Spyder bike in the summer of 1965 just like the one in the photo here. I think he paid $36 for it. I was 10 years old that summer. Wish I could find one and buy it as I was persuaded to sell it for $15 to a friend of grandmother's whose son wanted a bike. (sigh).

Hi! This photo is most likely the Sears Spyder from 1965 just like my Dad bought for me in June 1965. See attached photos. I am looking for the same kind of bike again at age 66. It was a good bike that I was persuaded to sell when I got a little older.
