Looking to refresh this junky Huffy. It has sat for a couple years in a carport, where the seat got stolen, tires rotted and metal rusted. It’s getting a banana seat and medium sized ape hangers. If I have time and find the parts, this will be another 3 speed with a trick brake system. Last year, in the RRBO, I built a sissy bar mounted brake, since the the frame stay had rusted away. Looking for another Shimano 333 hub to mount to a 26” rim, that won’t cost me a large sum. This is going to be a tough build since I’m now cramped in a 3rd floor apartment in Colorado winter. We’ll see what I can get accomplished.

A little bit of mock up with what I have. I picked up the handle bars and the sissy bar from my favorite bike shop, while back in Kansas. Tom Sawyer Bike shop has always taken great care of me. It’s been my go to as a kid. I haven’t really searched out any bike shops in Colorado yet. I think I will cut down the rear fender instead of swapping it with the front. The rims are going to take a bit of effort to get them sparkling again. Waiting for a straight springer fork to come through the mail. Then bits and pieces.

I got lucky today and picked up a Huffy Open Road 3 speed for 40 dollars. It wasn’t up for an hour on Craigslist, which I just check for 3 speeds once in a while. Everyone else is asking $160-$180, and $100 for 333 hub only. This Huffy will donate the 3 speed unit and the hub will get mated to a wider rim. Also, the handle bar stem, brake system and crank will be used.

Sitting on the rims from the three speed. I have 3 speed twist grips somewhere for this bike. One will be modified to be the brake pull. I may make another sissy brake for this bike, since I’m not a fan of the location for a brake in the frame.

Dug another piece to the puzzle. I found the Shimano 333 shifter grips I bought over a year ago. I had not noticed when I bought them, that they were both shifters. I found that I can remove a stop and a spring, and turn one in to a twist brake mechanism. Mated to the Sissy Brake caliper, it should be nice and sketchy to stop. The bike may need a parachute!

David, cool start and glad to see the parts are rolling in as planned. That frame has a great look, and great paint!

Muscle Bike Build oN~!

The coaster on the back will help. My kind of build: simple and straight-forward, with a twist (get it?)

Created a template for the midsection of the bike. I may try to give it the feel of having an engine. Some one inch thick pink foam board will give the base. Exhaust pipes made from the old handle bars will come out the bottom. It will possibly be used to hide cables.

Brilliant!
Classic color, the name escapes me.
For some reason I can't follow what hub goes to what rim.
Cramped apartments are the best places to work on bikes:grin:
