I actually started a thread for this build in the summer for the Rat Rod Build Off, but the only thing I had a chance to do was mock up some parts on the frame. I was waiting for the frame to come back from powder coating and it never did. Therefore I'm picking up where I left off.

The idea is a larger version (26/20) of the iconic Canadian CCM muscle bike, the Cobra. This was a one year bike, and many collectors would argue it's the most sought after nanner north of the border. I, unfortunately do not own one yet, so therefore I must build one. However it wouldn't be any fun for me to just build a replica. I gotta go custom.

The above pic shows the last three frames I sent off to powder. The Columbia on the right turned into my custom 5 speed Tail-Dragger pictured below. I could have saved it for the build off, but I was much to eager to build it. The frame in the middle has been powder coated black and is ready to go for King Cobra. The red frame on the left is still awaiting it's coat of powder, so it might be a second entry when I get the King Cobra done. It's a little chilly out this evening and I feel the winter in the air. I'll definitely be doing some hibernating in the shop this season throwing some bicycles together. Can't wait for some free time.

Always dig your muscle builds, J. Looking forward to this one!

Hoping the get to work on the frame shortly, but in the meantime I’ve been playing around with the idea of a custom vinyl checkerboard seat. Some CCM’s came with stock checkered seats, most notably the CCM Charger. There are even some wacky wavy checkered seats. I have a piece of screened checkered vinyl that I planned to use, but I decided to try something custom by making a vinyl cut mask and using vinyl spray paint. I’m still peeling of the squares but the results are pretty good. I just made the file in Adobe Illustrator. It probably makes more sense to spray black on white vinyl, but I already had a ton of black vinyl, so I bought white paint. It’s not cheap though. I paid $20 Cad for the paint. Once I finish peeling the squares, I’ll assemble the seat.

Got the seat wrapped today! It’s been a while since I did one and it went way smoother than I remembered. I use a spray adhesive I bought from the upholsterer and it works really well. I also splurged on a handheld grommet press a while back. It also works wonders. I bought the longer neck grommets and they reach through the pan the vinyl and foam like a charm. I have to say that the vinyl spray paint exceeded my expectations by far. It was super tedious peeling all the squares, but it was worth it.

Now the bike is on the stand and I’m still flip flopping between a 26” or 24” rear wheel. Both are Tractor Grip tires, but the 24” is the beefier 2.125. The pic shown is the 26” tire.

That is one sharp nanner! What sort of upholstery paint did you use?

I think I made the decision to go 26" on the rear for this build. A couple things solidified my decision. I generally like a beefier tire on the back end of a muscle bike, but the 24 x 2.125 Tractor grip just seemed to chunky for the size and feel of the frame. The second thing that did it for me was the fit of the fender. Miraculously I was able to dig through a box and find a fender that would match the profile of the front NOS fenders I have for a CCM Charger. All I had to do was cut the rear down, and it ended up having three perfect attachment points and all the right clearance. I was even able to mount the original fender clip to a sissy bar accessory mount. It was meant to be. You'd have a hard time telling that the rear fender is not original to the bike. This is an older frame, and I'm not even sure what model it was. I really like the original chrome CCM fork crown pictured below. I also have a larger assortment of original CCM chain rings and cranks, so no problem there. I started fitting sissy bars as well, and it seems like TALL is where it's at. I have a couple 5 footers, that seem to fit the stance and seat height nicely. I threw the front fork together and mounted the Cobra bars to get a feel for the look. It's definitely coming together the way I imagined. How do you like the 85 cent original price of the replacement charger fender. I went with pointed front fend and tucked the NOS charger one back in a box for a future build.

Moved on to the cranks. No problem here. I have many to choose from. I also have a ton of decals ready to go for this one thanks to the stash I got from my buddy John. I have head tube decal, seat tube decal and the checkered decal that fits the front fork behind the front brakes. Also have a few cobra chain guard decals already cut, but I’ll be adding the ‘King’, so I’ll be drawing some custom artwork.

Trying the tall bars just for the heck of it. Pretty certain the cobra bars will be getting the nod. The chrome is a little dull though and these are tough bars to find in any condition. Might look into chrome, but there’s nothing local. Maybe even bar tape. Not sure yet. It will depend on the quote from the chrome shop. Will find out this week.

Pro job on that saddle, J! Again, your penache for custom muscle bikes is shining through.

Masterful craftsmanship and conceptualizing. This is one cool seat.
