Ok so here we go.

Upgraded tires and bottom bracket.

Tires: 29x2.35 Big Apples
You will have to adjust the rear fender to get these big boys to spin.

BottomBracket : Shimamo un55 (68x118). Just enough to work. Prolly will go with 68x120 next time. The crank arm just clears the chain guard.

Here’s a pic, previously put some lights on for night riding and rockbros pedals.

I have to say after owning my old Onyx for 4 years (sold it a little over a year ago) and currently owning 2 Genesis bikes ( a GS 29 and a Super 32" ) these Genesis bikes are fun to have and ride and to fix up :)

Does anyone know if the brake shoes in the Onyx hubs are the same size as the Shimano E110 shoes or are they bigger? I purchased an Onyx a while back missing some parts from the rear hub. I just got back into the RRB community, thanks!

Here is my onyx, 2.35 schwalbe big apples, sealed bb cartridge, setback Thompson elite seatpost, new pedals, milk crate for groceries and beer. A little less than 400 into it. Ride to work most days, take it to happy hour once or twice a week.
Rides like a champ with the new big apples, highly recommended.
Longest ride so far was 18 miles after work. Love this thing.

What bottom bracket size fits this bike? thanks

So the bottom bracket is 68mm which was on the review, however the other measurement was wrong. After removing the stock bracket, it is 120mm. They just don’t make a 120mm bottom bracket (well, they don’t make a 120mm UN55). So I have just ordered a 68x118mm bottom bracket.

I’d like to know as well since I’m looking to replace mine soon.

👍

Zeroing in on a Shimano BB-UN300-K bottom bracket with a 122.5mm spline. Wanting to keep the chain guard/case. I have a concern about the chainline though; I measured about a 44mm chainline for the bike with the stock BB and crankset. I’d like to change out the crankset though, and I’m having a hard time finding a crankset that will give me a similar chainline measurement. Maybe there’s an economical combo available somewhere that will keep my chainline correct? Any ideas?

I ended up using the 118mm Shimano UN300 bottom bracket. Seems to fit just fine. I got the K version to use with stock chain guard. It’s certainly smoother and quieter than the cup and cone bottom bracket that came on the bike.

I also purchased a crankset on Amazon but the crank arm on the right side didn’t stick out enough to clear the chain guard. Ended up just re-using the stock crankset.

New Schwalbe 2.35 Big Apples feel great! Installed a non-adjustable Sunlite handlebar stem too. Bike already had the cushy fat butt Schwinn seat and I added a Black Ops layback post. Got a Tektro front caliper brake I might install but can’t find a lever to fit the 25.4mm handlebar. Oh well.
