My seat post needs to be a few inches longer to ride at the right height, and there's no chance of finding one here on Oahu. I've looked, no stash of old parts anywhere. But it's supposed to be 5/8", so I'm going to get a section of 5/8" rod at home depot for 9 bucks and see if it works. I wonder if anyone has tried this before.

It worked, and I have enough left for 2 more seat posts. The diameter was a tiny bit less than the original seat post but it only needed a couple turns extra to make it tight enough. I made it over a foot long in case I have it bent later for a laid back post. But it's easier to pedal right over the pedals.

I have a '41 Columbia with the same diameter. I bought 6ft of 5/8" precision-ground steel from McMaster-Carr, and its perfect. I polished and waxed it real good, but the next one will get a clear acrylic spray.
