So I finally got my hand on my mothers 1950's Columbia she got a new bike for mothers day so I got this bike from her for only 25 bucks witch is sweet. This bike has a cool story; when my Mother and Father bought my grandfathers house form him it was in a 100 year old shed in the back yard, and before that some of my grand fathers friends bought it for him as a gift in the late 1970's, it then sat in the shed for the next 20 years, and when my family moved in, my mother took it out of the shed and put it in to the yard and it became yard art, for the next 9 years it sat in the garden, and then 2 years ago my younger brother fixed it up for my mother. He put new wheels on it and some cool old baskets, I saved the Bendix rear wheel when he fixed it up so it's nice to have but I don't think I will put it back on, it's really rusty and the newer wheel set is safer and matches the old paint. That the crank set is bent would be an understatement so I will have to put some new cranks on. Oh, and the fork wants to turn left all the time, you have to fight it the hole time you ride it :confused:, I'm going to take off the front basket but haven't decided if I want to keep the rear one. Here is my starting point for build off 9, happy to be here building cool bicycles :D

I found out that this is a 1951 Columbia so that's cool :)


So I just finished tear down and it all looks good so far, except the cranks those are done for, the fenders I can take apart clean and reshape as for why the bike wants to turn left all the time I have no clue, the wheel set was a internal 3 speed but is was being used as a signal speed witch is fine, but now I have to rebuild it and I have no idea how to rebuild a 3 speed wheel set so if anybody can help me that would be great, the fork is one for the coolest things I have ever seen on a bicycle, this is my first 50's springer forks so I'm really excited. here are the bones now, time for cleaning :D

that bike survived well for all the neglect. the westfield serial #'s are well documented, if you google you should have no problem nailing the date down.

looks like someone rode with a bent crank for a really long time. That needs a weld repair to be whole again. patch in a bit of steel..
 
I hate how people get a bent crank or misaligned and they just keep riding it clunk clunk clunk till it eats through the frame. What is wrong with people?
 
Yah that was really put through some miles to wear through the stay unless someone cut it away for clearance. It does look like a great starting point though.

Yep, no shortcuts recommended for that one, get out the welder...

Awesome, that fork is killer, what have you planned for the look and paint/patina?

My family has a saying, It's taken this long for it to look like that why would you wreck it, in short patina all the way, and my only plan so far is to rip it apart and see what I have on my hands :D

Cool build! Columbia's have nice frames. I've got crank arms and a columbia sprocket for sale if you need them?
 
An interesting IN-trospecive view (cut-out) of the gauge of the steel used on these old American frames. This is why I have never broken American ballooner frames...never.:cool2:
 
I have made lots of progress today, I went to the BoiseBicycleProject so I could use some of their frame bending tools, one of my friends that works there was helping me straighten my fork out and make sure that my dropouts were even, I also rebuilt my fork assembly so that's nice to have done, there was lots of cleaning to do as well as lots of scrubbing with SOS pads and WD-40. I forgot the lock washers so I had to take it apart and put it back to gather

I rub oil in to the patina so it pops a little more

Those tools are soooo cool!

Nice work, I wish I had those tools. I spent most of the night trying to straighten a rack with a pipe-wrench and a garden gnome...

Yep. Those tools put my 2x4's, 2x6's, giant crescent wrench, plastic hammer,
body weight and a torch to shame...:thumbsup:
