I bet you are right. The rim width spread is too far apart for the tire to clinch. Nuts. Hopefully you can get a good seat with the tubes installed.

I got the first mockup done tonight. It still needs a chain, chainring, and the derailer cable. I found an extra 8 speed shifter, so it's an 8 speed instead of a 7. And I found an XT derailer for it. I really wish I could have gotten it lighter, but I went for ride ability over weight in several places.

Right now it's 31.4 pounds and probably needs about a pounds worth of parts.

But it sure looks cool!

That is one sweet ride! Well done! Just a thought, maybe to "hot rod" it a little more and make it more vintage...some pinstripes? I have used the decal style on my mountain bikes and really like the custom touch. Maybe you are a pinstripe painter, otherwise you could use a decal similar to this or others that are out there. That black frame is just begging for a little "fancy"....:wink1: You have produced a really cool and unique ORBO build here! Gained a new fan for sure:41:

Thanks for the compliments! OddJob, those decals are cool. I have a few buddies that pinstripe. I was thinking of getting some Surly decals for it. We will see.

I just ordered a chainring for it. JensonUSA has Shimano Ultegra rings for $6.99! It should be here in the next couple days. Once its hear I can button this bike up, and see if it will short onto the 42 tooth cog.

Luke - the clearance is about 3/8. Not too bad I suppose.

Here are a few more pics:

That is an outstanding build; 'Bad Boy' riding - Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall!!!

BTW - it has my vote

ITS DONE!!

Final weight is 32.36 pounds, so its about 5 pounds heavier than his Hotrock, but it has 8 speed and fat tires and disc brakes, so thats pretty good!

And since one of the rules of the build off is that it has to be rideable by an adult. Here is a video of me playing on it!

Another one done.
Now if we could just find that elusive finished builds thread.

I have a feeling this bike is going to get a lot of ooohs and aaahhhs from more than just us ratters....nicely done! That is one fat rat! Congrats on finishing the bike build and continuing the build on the father / son relationship. Good stuff.
