I posted a pic on 2 different FB pages before I got the bike asking for help identifying this bike I got for $20. There were many answers given. Now that I have it in my possession, I have more pics. The tires and grips are Sears which makes me think it could be an Elgin. I have found 2 instances online of Elgins with this chain guard. The crank and chainring look to be Dayton/Huffman. I don't think a rear stand has ever been bolted to the rear dropouts and there are no holes in the rear fender for a rear stand retainer. Also it has a bolt in kick stand. There is no holes in the front fender for a light which makes me think it was a "base" model and the chain guard was an "optional accessory" Any help would be appreciated.

No doubt in my mind that's a Huffman product, but impossible to tell how it might have been badged. The Sears grips and tires are red herrings from a much later era--that logo was used 1963-1984. I estimate somewhere from the 1940-41 time frame for the bike itself.

At $20, you got a major steal.

I agree with RustySprockets, a prewar Huffman. Here's a pic of a 40-41 Huffman, badged as a Western Flyer. Same chain ring, forks, and handlebar stem. Your down tube is straight, maybe it's a little older than this one. Your serial number may have the answer.

I looked at the serial number database on the CABE. There is one other serial number that starts with HW and it was claimed to be a Western Flyer.

Thanks. It must be a 37-39 Huffman. I think the chain guard is a Wald 656 after seeing an old ad in our "old ads" thread.

Nice find, love Huffman bikes $20 is a score. I was lucky enough to find a 1945 Huffman Dixie-Flyer for $100 a year ago.
