i dunnno if this is the right place to post this but is it posible for anybody on here to identfy bikes by the serial number?

dude i thought htis was kinda ironic, the bike is red and was built in novwmber of 1968 and my dad owns a super bee from 1968 and guess what? is also red!!
hpw cool is that? so i decedided it will be the super bee build! :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

hahahahaahah i got some super bee stickers and i could put the pentastar somewhere
that is the plan for the bike but it won't be done till at least spring since winter is uponus and i can't paint in the cold :( :(

that's the real sticking point for the Schwinn...I have a late-80's Taiwan-built schwinn cruiser...if I only went by the serial number, the bike is much older (puts it at a 1966)
What kind of schwinn?
Any other stickers (country of origin)?

Oh, wise guy, huh? :D Well you're not alone around here.

I think, lacking pics, what people want to know to help you with is:

Is it a 20" frame? A boys frame, girls frame, small frame (Junior) or
full size, coaster brake type or not? And when I say 20" frame I mean
does it take 20" wheels, not the seat post height... any of the larger
frames that measurement might be important but it's not, if it's a
small bike.

Schwinn made dozens, if not a hundred, different models in '68, it
was probably their most prolific year. So some more info on whatcha
got will help. You've gotten good advice about the general date of it.

If it had a headbadge, it wouldn't help. They didn't start tagging the
headbadges with a stamp until the mid-70's. 1975 I think but could be
a year or two earlier.

You can get new headbadges from Pete at Hyper-Formance if you want,
they're only $8 for the correct part (http://www.hyper-formance.com) or you
can get one off virtually any older Schwinn. (get the screws too!)

OK, so about the frame:
Coaster brake models will have a thin, curved arch between the rear stays,
with a hole only for mounting a fender. The 5-speed and 3-speed models
would have a flat bar across, with a hole positioned to mount a caliper
brake. If you're not certain, grab a caliper brake and see if the bolt hole
goes the right way.

There will also be usually a scrape mark on the left side where the coaster
brake strap goes around the frame, if it was a coaster. A 5-spd or 10-spd
model should have markings of having had a derailleur on the right rear
dropout. May also have cable stop clamps for 5-spds, or a pulley wheel on
the frame for a 3-spd model.

Now, what's the frame style? Curved frame like a Stingray? Two tubes
curve all the way from rear dropouts past seat tube to just below the
head tube? That's a Schwinn "cantilever" frame, the classic style.
Bigger bikes (24", 26") were made this way too, and could be a Tiger,
Corvette, Typhoon, or similar cruiser type models.

It's not possible to tell what it was just from serial number info, but
there is a second good date code on it if you have the original fork.
With the front wheel removed, look inside the fork: on one of the
arms you'll find a number stamped and it'll be like "12+8": that would
mean Dec 1968 in your case, probably close to the real "finished"
date of your bike.

Any forged parts like the crank or neck, or the handlebars, if you
got those with it, should have a date stamp in the center. If you
find numbers on these pieces, post them here and folks can help
you decode them.

The good thing about these bikes is that many things interchange
between many different Schwinns. A crank or bars or seat post
should fit from one to another of similar models. They're also
well documented as far as how a bike was equipped.

Aside from expenses for things like seats, and difficulties finding
Schwinn-specific stuff like S-7 tires, they're generally very easy to
source parts for and to restore.

Oh yeah and as for your Chrysler fixation...

"mopar or no car"

... I had a '62 Belvedere I bought (for $75!!!) when I was 17, towed it home and had it
running in about an hour. Slant-6 and a pushbutton automatic, aw yeah!

Took my driver's test in a '76 Dodge Aspen station wagon with a 4-spd (Floor shifter and
a red vinyl bench seat, whatta car!). The driving inspector took one look at it and said,
"You drove here in this?" "Yep" "Alright, just get it out of the parking lot, and you pass."
The back lot of the DMV at that time was a hill straight up to a gate, then you had to pull
out onto kind of a blind side street. I think the guy was happy to test someone who could
actually DRIVE. I used to steal it and drive around at night when I was 15. My dad would
be out at night and I knew if I had it put away I'd never get into trouble with it. Never
did get caught but I never did find out if he noticed the mileage I racked up. I'd always
sneak it back into the garage in the exact same spot.

Don't get any ideas!

We also had a '70 Duster, '74 Dart (ugh, tan 4-door), a 76 Volare wagon (dad's first new
car ever) and a '78 Volare 2-door as I was growing up. Not as fun as the car your dad's
got but they were all good reliable transportation, save the one engine block that had
to be replaced in the '76. It was fixed for free as it turned out but pretty much a rare
factory defect.

Then when I was not-quite 18 I wrecked the Aspen, and started driving VWs for the
next... 15 years or so! Had a lot of fun with them and still have my '70 Bus and a
'70 Bus pickup truck... but that's another story.

that was a MONDO help
it is a stringray style frame and the bike came complete
i'm pretty sure it was all original parts
yes disappontigly the headbage was gone but the grips said shciwnn and i'm all=most 11% poaitive it is a schwin
it is a smaller frame that takes 2o inch wheels
i won't be able to post numbers till tomrow but i'll get right on it

it is a child boys bike with a coaster hub....stingray style frame
it takes 20 inch wheels

its gonna be a lowrider but i wanted just a bit of backround on it so i new what i was dealing with
i wanted to make sure i had it all figured out before i started ordeing parts
and thanks to u guys i do!!
