Day 10 Update

So, I'm wandering in the Home Depot aisles, trying to figure out what I'm going to do to get this old sunken seat post removed / extricated / exorcised from the seat tube of the SKU. Their 1/2" drill was already rented out, so there goes that idea. I'm in the drill bit aisle, and I spot a bi-metal hole saw bit for a 3/8" drill! What?!?

Slapped down my money, buzzed home, and pulled a Cable Guy. Got er dun!!

Of course the hole saw cut a nice 7/8" ring all the way to the top of the seat tube, but then there was a hollow-tubed core left behind that I used my 1/2" and 5/8" bits on to grind away until I had a free and clear, 7/8" aka 22 mm cylindrical hole in my seat tube. I stuck my 22.2 quill stem I had on hand for measuring and it went down in nearly 4 inches, which will be plenty. YahoooOOOOoooo!

After the first couple of grinds, the white paint on the bit is wearing off....That's a good sign~!

Then after 4 or 5 more rounds of grinding....

At this point I was sunk in all the way up to the chuck on the drill. And was touching the top of the seat tube in the cast lug, so that was deep enough.

And, there was an extra hole in my 'bit log' for my new favorite bit too!

Now, to peruse the parameters for a 22.2 quill seat post or maybe a stem adapter to use for my post.

I'm getting there!~ RaT oN~!

Here's one of the reasons I'm trying to kick this build out through the finished chute early.
Our neighbor girl is getting married on June 24, and her mom asked me to create a 'bicycle wedding buggy' for bride and groom to ride together on between the ceremony and the cocktail reception.

I have fixed the family's bikes over the years, and the mom is a former interior design artist (who once lent me her spray bottle labeled "Instant Rust") who specializes in faux-tina.
Here's her fireplace mantle area she designed and built by herself.

Pretty cool.

Anyway, we are going to take the bride's aunt's trike and make a 'pedal carriage' out of it. I will document it in the Other Builds forum.

You got a Harbor Freight by you? They've got a dirt cheap polishing kit with rag wheels of various sizes and multiple grades of polish bars. I polished a Silver King frame a few years ago using a battery powered DeWalt screw gun. Worked very well.

Link please! Would like to follow that build. You know , trikes.... ;-)

I've got that same trike, but mine is no where near that nice of condition. I also have different wheels. Can't wait to see what you do with it!

Thanks Andy! Yeah, mechanically it's in really good shape. And I like the mag wheels.

Day 14 (early) Update on SKU

Between taking care of yard chores and a nice long road bike ride yesterday, I got a little work done on the SKU.

While I was on my ride, I started thinking about ways I could incorporate the Trek belt drive tensioner that had come with the kit. Because of the nature of the cast aluminum rear stays, and the aluminum tensioner, it wouldn't fit in the drop out like it would on a modern dimension rear drop out. And, I had no derailleur hanger on the frame from which to mount it.

Then my mind switched to parts I had picked up when trying my first adapter for disc brake mounting, and remembered a axle mounted derailleur hanger I had stashed. When I returned from the ride, I found it, still in it's packaging, in my disc brake parts box. ( OCD - I know)

During my beautiful hour + long ride, I also remembered that I had a Surly Singleator single speed chain tensioner in my mtb parts box (again with the OCD) that I had formerly used on my Fisher Rig single speed 29er conversion, back about 10 yrs ago. My knees had given up their k-need for single speed torment by my late '50s, so I had gone to a 1 x 9 set up which was much more friendly on the hills!

As I paired my Trek belt drive tensioner with the Surly Singleator, and the bolt on rear der mount, I ended up with a combo that fits pretty well, and I think will help keep the slack out of the belt, and act as a guide for the belt to maintain the 'belt - line' as it were.

Here are some photos I shot this a.m. The seat post came in late last evening, so I'm hoping for my first 'ride vid' on the Silver King Unchained later today !

I used the Surly arm and the silver guides, and replaced the der pulley wheel with the belt guide wheel from the Trek system. I had to use a longer bolt in the dropout slot and then a washer, but it fit after some adjusting.

The spindle that the guide pulley is mounted on is adjustable, so I was able to slide it into place to get a nice straight belt - line to the drive ring on the crank.

And finally, here's the 7/8 " aka 22.2 mm seatpost that came on the Amazon truck last evening......

There will be some slicing and dicing going on in the BACK40 today! StaY tuNed! RaT oN~!

That Singleator is a nice piece. So cool to see the juxtaposition of classic and modern. Any plans for patination of the new stuff?
I'm kind of thinking no 'patination' on the new stuff as of now. I like the jux of vintage and modern too, as you put it. Kind of like a original patina car build that has all new running parts under the cover of the classic, aged body.
