just finished restoring schwinn stingray, but need tires. front rim 20" x 1.75 marked s-7, rear is 20 X 2.125. would like to know where i should get them. Is back rim called s-2 rim? would like front and rear to be same tire, does anyone have any suggestions? thanks!

the front wheel isnt 1.75, but rather 1 3/4. yes theres a difference. go to your lbs and ask if they an order the front one for ya, the back slick you gotta get on ebay.

It depends how important it is for your bike to be original. Stingray tires were specific to certain models. Sounds like you have the most common setup for a standard Stingray- S7 front and S2 rear are used on most models, most years.

Tires come in a lot of different styles and manufacturers and price ranges.

For original and nicely restored bikes, a lot of collectors want to find made-in-USA originals. Best of the best is "NOS" or New Old Stock- these are unused tires that have been stored away and never mounted on a bike. Original Schwinn tires were mostly made by Carlisle Rubber Co. in Ohio. These will say MADE IN USA and have a date code that looks like the picture below. C 12 1 1 indicates a Dec. 1971 production date. C is Carlisle, and the last digit doesn't seem to mean anything.

After that, reproduction tires are available. The rear tire above and the whitewalls in the following pic are new copies of the original Schwinn designs.

These are quite nice and well made and much cheaper than originals. They are made in Taiwan or China, and the markings are hidden down in the bead area. Schwinn stampings appear on the sidewalls and the tread designs are correct. Expect to pay $30-50 per tire. Front tires in the S7 size have recently become hard to find. Rears (S2 size) are available from Hyper-Formance or Memory Lane Classics.

Non-original tires are made in a hundred different styles. Regular and whitewall tires are made in street and slick treads for the rear. S2 is the same size as typical BMX or other 20" bike rims. S7 tires are special, about 15mm bigger diameter rims, and the two wont interchange. Niagara Cycle is a great place to buy tires for these sizes.

Good luck, feel free to ask questions. If I don't know the answer I'm sure many others on here will be able to help.
